Blank Navigation Screen

I have a 2002 X-type 2.5. The naviagation screen has gone blank and the bottons around screen do not work. LCD screen below units flashes 50 & 51. I took to the dealer and they say I need new navigationmodule in the trunk at a cost of $4,400. I disconnected battery and checked fuses before taking to the dealer, with no luck. Is there a way to bypass this unit so the air works? Or is there a cheaper fix? Thank-you

First, I would check places like E-bay and the local wrecking yards and see if you can find a good used unit. Should be much cheaper than what you said above. Most wrecking yards are part of a large network and if they don't have the piece in the yard, they can have it sent there for a small charge. Sounds like the radio has gone into protection mode and is attempting to prevent further damage. You can try simply unplugging the nav unit in the rear of the car and seeing if that brings back the radio. I don't have the service CD with me at work or else I would look this up for you.
