Default Boot Open indicator on

The red light in the dash that signals "boot open" stays on all the time now. The two little "bumpers" mounted on the arms in the trunk (boot) have both broken off, I assume this has somthing to do with the light being on all the time. Where can I obtain new bumpers, they seemed to be spring loaded plungers that may have added counter pressure on the lid.

Leo, the bumpers have nothing to do with the boot ajar light. The switch for determining if the boot is open is located in the latch assembly next to the motor for the latch. If you look at the motor, you will see a 5 pin plug (4 wires attached to it). If you look, the middle wire will be a black wire (pin #3 spot) and at one end will be a brown wire in the #5 spot. What you need to do is to connect up a multimeter from the brown wire (red lead) and the black wire (black lead). With the boot open, you should see 12 VDC on the multimeter. If you don't see 12 VDC, then you have a bad wire between the plug and the GEM module. Now, with the multimeter out of the way but still in view, close the boot. Did the multimeter drop to 0 VDC? If yes, then the switch is functioning properly and your problem lies in the instrument cluster. If the multimeter stayed at 12 VDC, you have a problem with the switch in the boot. Now connect up the multimeter between pins 5 and 3 on the latch side of the plug. Using a screw driver or something similar, rotate the mechanism manually and make sure that the latch closes and the multimeter drops to a low resistance (less than 5 ohms). If not, you have a bad latch switch. Replace the switch. If it does drop to below 5 ohms, then you have a problem with the plug itself.

Hopefully this helps you get your problem resolved. Please keep in mind that these instructions are based on an 04+ X-Type. If you have an 02 or 03 one, the wires should be the same. But, in case you do find something a bit different, let me know and I will get you the correct stuff.

Mine does this too as my "pop-up" bumpers/springs are broken as well. It seems as though because it never pops up and clears the latch, the latching mechanisms won’t reset to close properly. The workaround for me is to press the trunk release button again once it’s open and lifted. Afterward, it shuts fine and the light goes out. If that doesn’t work, it’s a bad switch and Thermo's diagnosis method would work.

Try this...........with the "boot" open, press the button on it as if you were opening it.
If you hear the latch motor cycle that is your problem. If you close the boot after doing
this, the "Boot Open" message/indicator "should" be gone. Mine does this so I just always press the button on the boot before I close it. Sometimes the motor cycles, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know what the cause is. It drove me nuts when I first got the car!

I have a problem with mine as well. Sometimes it closes, other times it doesn't and the latch cycles twice. It never used to do this before so something is definitely wrong...

JagXV6, if the latch motor is cycling with the boot open, then the car thinks the latch is still in the close position. So, it most likely is the position switch that is acting up on you.
