Default Can't get my new ELM327 Scanner to work

Hi Guys,

First off I am NOT a computer nub, but I am not an Android man.

I bought a new ELM327 Mini that is blue in color and a used Samsung Tab 4 mini tablet. I installed the Torque Light ODBC (free app).

The pairing of the 327 to the Tab4 looks to have worked. I used the 1234 passcode and it is listed on the Tab4's screen.

When I start the Torque app it never looks like it hooks up. The small blue car is blinking in the top right of the screen. The other 3 icons are just lit. I never get any data from the car.

I have mess with the settings in the app, key on, key off, start car, re-boot everything....nothing.

I did try this on my Ford Explorer with the same results....nothing. Downloaded another app....still nothing.

What am I doing wrong???

Larry, there is a second code that the ELM units can use (9999?). If you do some looking, it is listed. I had the same sort of issue and that was the problem. Once you get it hooked up and working, you will find the unit very nice to have when looking over problems with your vehicle.

Something else that just hit me, which version do you have? Because of your 2003 X-Type, if you have a V2.1 unit, it may give you grief. The V2.1 units are meant more for the 2005 and up vehicles with the improved CAN bus setup. The V1.6 (or is it V1.8) units are geared specifically to your car. Granted, the V2.1 units should dumb down to work with your car (atleast that is what they claim they will do).

Is Bluetooth activated on your tablet settings? Looks like there's plenty of YouTube videos for this device. Have you looked at any of those? I searched "elm327 pairing."

There is a youtube video that should help you, title escapes me. Had the same issue.

But the V may be my issue not reading my sensors, I may pickup an older V and see if it reads my junk.

I spent time on the internet learning about the 327.....more then I wanted to know.

Youtube did not tell me to much that I did not try already. I searched for all the codes and made up my own, only to find out that 1234 is the only one that works. I did find an app that identified what ver you have. The app found my 327 and display information on it. Some I do not understand just yet. So it does communicate. Mine is a 2.1 Ver. This may be the problem with it being too new..

Any other ideas?

what protocol (ISO?) do our cars use?

As Paul Harvey would say, now the rest of the story....

I took my setup of a friends house who has a three year old Chevy truck. The 327 and Tab pad worked great! So yes the Ver 2.1 is too new for my old cat.

I ordered a new model that is WIFI (not a big blue tooth fan) that should run on Apple and Droid. I can return it if it does not work. $17.00

I will let you know how it works.

Ok Guys an update.

I just got my Veepeak model VP01 WIFI mini OBD II module. From Amazon.

Being WIFI, something I work with every day, it was up and running in a few minutes. I attached to it as if it was a network in the Tab4 settings, then a few changes in Torque free. Bing Bam Boom!

Now I just need to learn Torque. Should I get the Pro model?

Yes, Pro version is worth the few dollars. I like it for the customizable dash screens!
