Thumbs down Car overheats at idle, cooling fans running for awhile after car is off

On my way home i knoticed the car overheating, when idleing( at lights etc.). The cooling fans were running full speed, even after i turned the car off for at least 5 minutes. I popped the hood and seen coolant near the overflow. Any idea what would cause this? Im assuming a bad water pump? I know it wasnt the water pump belt, becuase it was running fine. My other guess would be a faulty thermostat?....

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

monchie, atleast from my experience with this car, the water pump normally doesn't fail to provide flow. It fails by having an external leak. But, it is possible. What I would say to do is since the cost of a water pump is cheap (just replaced mine for $50) and a thermostat is another $40, to get both, drain the coolant one time, replace both and call it good.

I also ask that you don't rule out the fans quite yet. The reason why I say that is normally when the thermostat or water pump go and are causing an overheat condition, they raise their heads on the highway, not at idle. What you are describing as times that the car overheats is a classic fan control module issue. The easy check for this is to park the car, open the hood, start the engine and turn the A/C on to MAX (ie, fastest fan, temp as low as it will go). This will force the fans to run at full speed regardless of the engine temp. Now, when you are standing at the front bumper and leaning over the radiator some, the wind should be blowing really good (to the point of moving your hair). If you are getting just a gentle breeze, then your fans/fan module is going. This isn't an issue on the highway as the air flowing through the grille is more air than the fans can pull. So, in short, on the highway, the fans are being a restriction.
