Default Car shutting off randomly

My friend has an 02 X type 2.5, it randomly shuts off. I have seen it do it while accelerating and at a stop light. No code was thrown until yesterday. The dealer says the code points to the instrument cluster but isn't sure that will fix the problem. Any ideas I can try before he spends $1k on this part?

The car has about 70K on it. I will also add it has done it about 7 times. And sometimes it will crank right back up other times it will take about five minutes before it will crank.

I am getting the code tonight so I will post it later.

That sucks grim...hopefully you get it figured out bud...

Looking up ford codes this is what comes up on google...

Ford code

P1638 Can Link ECM/INSTM Circuit / Network Malfunction

Jaguar code
P1638 CAN Link ECM/INSTM Circuit/Network

So the code is the same for both ford and jag which I assumed would be.

Could it be from the ecm being loose or something techs???
