Default Car turns over, but wont start

Ok guys, I searched the forum, but didn't see much relating to my problem (sorry if i'm wrong). I went to start my car today and when I turned the key, the engine turned over but just would hiss and wouldn't actually start. It would just continue hissing until i stopped turning the key. The dashboard lights came on, so it's not dead, and it did turn over. Do you have any suggestions? It's being towed to the dealer tomorrow. It's an 02 x-type 3.0 with 124K. This is really the first problem I have had with it.

Newbie, I would be venturing to guess that you have a bad fuel pump. Based on what you are describing, that is the most likely thing. I really doubt the ECM is toast since you are getting a signal to the starter relay. You could try putting a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail and seeing what it reads. With the engine off, it should be up between 40-50 psi. If you aren't seeing this, then that says you have either a bad pump or a clog in the fuel line. may want to look at the fuses for the fuel pump too. hate to see you spend the dealership money for a simple fix.

Thanks Chris for your help. How much labor would it take my dealer to fix, and do you have any ideas how much fuel pumps are to replace? Thanks for your help.

Newbie, you are probably looking at about 2 hours of labor. A new fuel pump through the dealership is going to be $401 (as priced through jaguarparts.com). So, you can plan on a bill to the tune of about $700 (1 hour of diagnostics, 2 hours of remove/reinstall, $400 pump). I should be pretty close on the price. The dealership may only get you for 2 hours of labor, but I would not be surprised if they don't get your for all 3.

I'm totally cool with that. I hope it's the fuel pump if that's the case. I will surely let you know what the diagnostic shows (keeping my fingers crossed). It's being towed into the dealer tomorrow. Is it possible to substitute a chaeaper fuel pump out instead of the jaguar brand???? I hate paying for just the jaguar name. thanks for your help! I really appreciate your help!

$400 from the dealer would be a great price as they go for $500-600 from NAPA. I don't think A Jag dealer is not going to install a non Jag part.

Ok, its been a crazy day. The cars engine was actually flooded. The service manager said the sound was identical to a broken timing chain. I am shocked it flooded ( I don't know how) but it did. Thanks for your help guys! I really appreciate the advice!
