Cheap fix for the Jaguar X-Type 2.0d and 2.2d rattling problem (not with C2S51547)
I don't know if this has been around, but here is how to fix the terribly annoying rattling problem on any Jaguar X-Type 2.0d and 2.2d, effectively and cheaply.
The problem:
The car is rattly and noisy, especially on the lover revs and during idling. The reason for that is alternator rotating mass, which between the powered engine strokes puts opposing load onto serpentine belt system. The tensioner looses with time, and causes belt rattling sounds. The crankshaft pulley also suffers because of this solution, and fails prematurely.
The Jaguar solution is making a beefed up parts, which resulted in rather expensive C2S51547. That does solve the problem, but the issue of the alternator rotating mass remains, and the load is transferred back onto the crankshaft. As a solution this is very inefficient, and in essence acts as a leach on car power (you can call it parasitic stealing of horsepowers).
The solution:
Couldn't be simpler. You just install alternator clutch. The clutch replaces the one piece aluminum pulley on the alternator, and makes it spin free when it is faster than the belt. That dramatically reduces loads on serpentine belt and tensioner, and eliminates rattling. I've done this on my car, and it worked brilliantly.
What you need to install is: INA 535 0223 10
It costs about 39 GBP here, and can be installed by any mechanic with appropriate tool.
The parts fits both Visteon (Jaguar), and Bosch (Ford Transit) alternators. It comes with to spacers, one for Visteon and one for Bosch, and is made especially to cure this (stupid) problem.
There are even videos about it:
Jaguar X-Type 2.0D (TDCI) Bj. 2004 - INA - Overrunning Alternator Pulley (OAP) - Generatorfreilauf - Alternator - Lichtmaschine - Visteon 1S7T-BC OAP/Generatorfreilauf is produced by INA-Schaeffler Group/Germany.
And here is the manual for INA 535 0223 10 installation:

I have previously fitted the OAP on both my 2.2 x types.
The tensioner will need replacing too, I have also fitted the thicker transit mk7 crank pulley/damper also.
Regarding the Visteon alternator, you will need to remove the raised casting and fit the thicker 3mm shim to space the oap properly.

Hi James, this is a great posting, I have a 2.0D on a 2008 plate and really want to change this on mine, do you know which tool I need to order to fit the pulley, apparently there are two a 33 tooth one and possibly a 31 tooth one, any help would be appreciated.

I recently fitted a 2008 2.2D with the OAP (as mentioned by others, had to cut off the "lip" from the Visteon alternator, and used 3mm spacer). It's amazing how well it worked - I am no longer embarrased by idling with the fan on!
