Check engine light on-temp gauge go up!!!!

I am driving a 2001 jaguar xtype manual transmission.

When I drived on the motorway last night the check engine light came on while I was driving it at the same time the temperature gauge would go up to hot , but the vehicle is not really overheating! as soon as I turn the car off for a simple second and turn it immediatly back on.. the gauge will go back to the middle, but 5 min. later go back to reading hot! I had the coolent sensor fixed, but still have the problem. Has anyone had this problem yet. I'm really not looking forward to having to replace the tranny like it seems everyone has had to do. wish I would have seen this web site before I got into this nightmare.

I have not read about too many people replacing the tranny on a manual car!!! Maybe you have an intermittent short in the part of the electrical system that operates the gauge!!!!
