Checking the front brake pads.

Checking the front brake pads.
Yesterday the owner at the Garage I took my car to for a service lied to me twice about the work he was supposed to carry out.
He also told me I need my front brake pads changing, he did not take the wheels off so I assume they are visible with the wheels on.
Will the brake warning light come on when the pads need changing?
Is there any way I can check to see the thickness of the pads without jacking the car up?

Thanks for the reply.
I do have alloy wheels with slots taken out so I can see the disc and rear side of the brake pads but cannot see how many MM or ware are left on the pads.
He lied about replacing the sump plug.
I asked when getting the quotation and the day of the service to please replace the sump/drain plug.
I also asked him that day if he managed to get the drain plug, he said "Yes, no problem".
I asked who would do the service, he said "I will".
He got a young lad to do the service.
He could have told me he could not get the drain plug but I hate being lied to.
When I got home and looked under the car I saw it was the original plug and drove back to get the truth out of him.
He said he did not charge me for it and replaced the copper washer.
On the receipt it says I was charged for the sump plug. It's not the cost, just that he lied.
When he quoted me for the brakes the secretary said "That's more than the cost of the service" he said "that's because it has a sensor".
So it looks like he lied about that too from what you have written.

brake light
If your fluid is low your brake light will come on. Also if your abs light is on along with the brake light your abs module could be on its way out. I hate to say it but I think you got taken for a ride. Time to go back to the shop and get your money back , then find a better shop to service your kitty.
Good luck,
The Dr!

The brake pads do have a "sensor" which is just a slim piece of metal that will start squeeling when the pads wear down. The 3/4 inch metal edge rubs on the disk and vibrates at a high frequency. The squeeling is what is supposed to make you want to go get them fixed. it will only get louder and more annoying.
