Question clanging noise from engine

Heeeelp.
My x type 3ltr jag has developed a really nasty knocking/ clacking noise like a stuck tappet. It speeds up and down with revving the engine. I have seen a post on you tube with an identical sound but no answers.
Have checked the oil and is fine. Could anyone offer any ideas of what it may be.
Thanks
Hayley

Do you have a link to the youtube?

Is the engine throwing any codes?

This sounds very similar to the noise my jag is making.
I have uploaded mine to youtube but must be getting checked.
Regards
Hayley

Wow, that sounds really bad, Hayley. You better just take it into a mechanic to have it checked out before your engine is seriously damaged.

My partner is a mechanic
We have taken it to a few other mechanics but it has stumped everyone.
We just wondered if anyone has any idea what could be the cause could be. The car still drives fine! ..... we are not driving it at the moment.
I love my jag and just want my baby fixed.

Ok, nevermind then, Hayley.

Has your boyfriend used a Mechanic's Stethoscope to isolate where in the engine bay the noise is coming from? That's what I would try next. Let us know what you find out!

A similar sound on my neighbour's car turned out to be a slight blow on the bottom edge of an exhaust manifold gasket. Nothing to see, but when eventually diagnosed, it could be felt (V carefully!!)

Hi Mattsteel,
He said the noise is coming from the bank of cylinders closest to the bulk head, around the timing chain area.

It sounds to me like a timing belt about to let go. Not an easy job. Keep us posted.

Good luck,
The Dr!

My partner did say he thought it may be the timing chain, he was just rather hoping it wasn't that and someone might give a much simpler conclusion.... and seeing as it only has 60000 on the clock!
He is going to take the engine out sometime this week and go from there.
Fingers crossed

If its coming from the timing chain housing.... well I will hope for the best for you guys.

Keeping fingers crossed,
The Dr!
