Default Clicking brake pedal question...

Like many of you I have the clicking microswitch issue whenever I brake. It's been clicking for 4 years now. Don't even notice it. Well, recently it's taken to constant clicking when my foot's on the brake pedal. Not all the time, just now and then. Go to brake and CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK...
My question is: Can I take the switch out? Will the car start, go into gear, and do everything else without the darn switch?

Where is the clicking noise coming from? Pedal or console?
You can't pull it out and throw it away because you will have to manual release the vehicle from park and start it in neutral every time. When you depress the brake with the car in park it activates a solenoid to release the shift lever from park. The switch also controls the off position of the cruise control.
Have you tried spraying the switch with electrical contact cleaner? The other choice is, if the clicking is from the pedal, replace the switch.

If the solenoid is clicking when not in Park, that is an indication that the Not-in-Park microswitch in the J Gate has failed. Access is straight forward - just be careful not to drop any screws into the transmission tunnel; it's difficult to get them back!

A replacement switch is available at Radio Shack or similar

Are you sure it's not a worn pivot bushing at top of the brake pedal? If that's in good shape I'd say replace the switch.

It's definitely the microswitch by the shifter. Would a squirt of WD40 work?

If you are going to go that route I recommend not using WD-40. Use electrical contact cleaner. If it cycling like that it probably is replacement time.
