Default Climate Control Question

Quick question I'm sure a more experienced X Type owner can answer....

When I put the climate control on "Auto" the A/C indicator always shows on. Read the owners handbook and this seems to be by design.... question is, is the compressor running even though it's near freezing out? seems like it would take a toll on both the A/C and gas mileage if this is the case.

If I'm missing something obvious please be kind as I'm still learning about my "new to me" 2004 X type.

Thanks in advance

No the compressor is not always running, but it is used to dry the air to help in defrosting and demisting.
