Clunking noise from front end
My 2007 X type 3.0 with 50,000 miles on it, started making a clunking noise today. If you are driving and the wheel is pointed straight and you go over a bump, or if you turn the wheel to the right just slightly away from center, a clunking noise can be heard from the front left wheel arch. It almost sounds like plastic hitting something but I looked underneath the car and in the wheel arch and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. Any idea what this could be?
A clunk can be caused by the sway bar bushings (I had this on my 05 wagon and it took a lot of work to find the cause); Jaguar did redesign the bushings. There may be other causes, but this is one of them.
When I bought my car it had a bad clunk on both sides in the front end. I got the price of the car down $1500 because of it, and bought it. It turned out to be the front anti roll stabiliser sway bar llnks that were worn. They are relatively cheap and easy enough to fit. The genuine ones are made of plastic but, of course, with steel and rubber bushings. I didn't like the idea of using plastic but have been told that is quite common (?), and put steel ones in. I have had no front end problems since. This could also be your issue.
G’day Evan,
Another ‘clunk’ source could be worn shockers. I replaced mine, after I’d replaced all the sway bar bushings front and rear, and then the ‘clunk’ went away.
Cheers,
Jeff.
