coolant leak
My wife complained to me the other day that after turning the ignition of she was still able to hear a fan running for a few minutes. Through inspection I noticed that the coolant reservoir was empty. I added coolant and drove it to work this morning. Through further inspection I noticed coolant on the ground on the drivers side of the engine and coolant pooling on top of the engine directly under the hoses running from the reservoir to a tee in the line and I assume back toward the firewall to reach the heater core. I did a quick visible inspection of the hoses in that location for a leak and found none. Is there a common leak in this area? should I be looking for any other connection? it could'nt be a gasket somewhere I hope?

RE: coolant leak
Hey there zero n welcome to the forum mate.
Re the fan - see below
Sounds like itsthe tinyfan which carries on running in humid conditions to circulate the air so you don't get blasted by warm air when you use your climate control. It circulates air across the humidity sensor.
It keeps running for a while after you switch off, and starts again
when you open a door. It does this so that there is less delay in
getting the climate control to the right setting when you switch on
(or restart )

RE: coolant leak
umm.... to state the obvious... liquid is affected by gravity.. find the highest point of coolant and the leak shoudl be there. eventually you can find it by dabbing a white paper towel or cloth around.
i dont know of any common leak there. the common leak is around the thermostat housing which is under the battery.

You can't replace components of the water pump, only the entire assembly. They're only ~$75. I had to replace mine about 3k miles ago. It's the easiest thing I've done to the car. Remove the battery (and lower half of plastic battery box), remove the three or four nuts that hold the pulley to the water pump, then remove the 12 or so bolts that hold the water pump to the block. You'll loose about a gallon of antifreeze, maybe a bit less. Refit the new pump with the included new gasket, refill with the appropriate coolant, and life is good.
Once you get the battery out of the car you'll see how easy it is. Good luck!

The dealer wanted $150ish for the pump itself. I got mine from a local NAPA store for $75. Welsh Ent. and other Jag parts dealers have them for the same price. I'm sure you can source on locally. Every place I called around here had a couple in stock.
The shaft connecting the pulley to the impeller had a fair amount of play in it, so mine was definitely more than a gasket. At water pump really should fail at 28k miles, but I wouldn't be *surprised* if it needed to be replaced. It couldn't hurt to replace it.

RE: coolant leak
There is a simple procedure..I can't remember exactly at the moment..But unless someone else mentions how today, I will post the procedure tonght..
BTW..did you buy the high dollar anti-freeze from JAG?....When I did my flush, I think I paid around $75.00 for a gallon of their concentate....Also make sure you always mix it 50/50with Distilled H2O.
