It's been awhile since I posted, but I just got rear ended, some d-bag decided to merge into my trunk on the highway.
Has anyone had the rear bumper replaced, if so, how much did it cost?
I got $1,000 deductible, I'm hoping it's not too bad. I got hit right above my rear wheel, it took out the side marker and scratched up through the corner of the bumper.
I guess I should also have the rear wheel checked out just in case.
This blows, people love hitting my car.

 

I would guess that to replace the bumper with paint, etc is going to be well over $1000. Sorry. Isn't the at fault driver having their insurance cover it? If so, definitely get every thing right down to the suspension parts checked out, repaired and replaced.

 

JP, assuming that there is a tear or creases in the bumper cover, then that is going to require a new bumper cover to be installed which is going to put the job into the 1,000's, easily. It would not surprise me if it isn't into the $3,000 (USD) range by the time all is said and done. But, this is also assuming what sort of damage you are talking about here.

Like was mentioned, sounds like the other guy is at fault and they should be picking up the tab with you paying $0 out of your wallet. Granted, I know some states have goofey laws about declaring who is at fault. If you do have to pay your deductible, I would recommend getting a lawyer to help you recoup that money. Even if you only get $500 back after the lawyer takes their share, you are still money ahead. Normally though, once you start saying my lawyer's name is...... people stand up, take note and make things right. May want to even try going after the lawyer fees too, that way it is truely nothing out of your pocket.

 

pics would help, i remebr whe i got rear ended they quoted me a 1000, and said that it was my fault for stopping sudennly, when i clearly saw him int he rear view mirror waving to someon on a bus beside him. Once i mentioned cops, they smartened up and took care of it, apparently they were HIGH

 

In the UK usually if the driver at fault admits guilt in writing you dont pay or pay then claim back your excess.If he denies fault and you have witnesses then thats great for you.
A lot of solicitors (accident management companies) over here do a no win no fee scheme if the other driver is at fault where you call them and they deal with the claim on your behalf you dont even have to call your insurer.They put you in a hire car of at least same type, get your car recovered to a good bodyshop get you assessed and claim money if injured or out of pocket and ensure you dont have to pay your excess.Their costs are claimed from the insurer of the driver who is at fault.Many now are also offering you money eg £250-£500 to use them as they fight to get your business!

 

you get punted in the rear it's pretty much the other guy's fault as far as the insurance companies see it. Even if the cop declares it a "no-fault" the insurance companies will work it out between themselves.

Perhaps this would be a good time to consider a body kit, eh? Take advantage of the situation (the bumper replacement, that is, not the insurance company...)

 

Thanks for the replies, I called the Jag auto body in LI, they gave me an estimate of $1,000 for the rear bumper work alone. I'm def filing this one.

Hope she won't be gone for too long. Last time I had work done, I had an orange Mitsubishi Eclipse for a few days, then a blue Ford Escape. =(

I don't see how the cops can file this under "no fault" but I'll find out Monday when the report comes in. I did find out that the other guy has the same insurance as I do, which sux.

 

yeah, that does suck. But it happens all the time. If it's just a rear bumper cover you can do the work yourself pretty easy (install, not paint). But you never know what kind of damage is behind it. Some body shops will work with you on your deductable too, so ask about that.

"No fault" can happen if say a 3rd party causes the crash between you and somebody else. Not a regular occurrance but it does happen.

Don't feel bad, two summers ago I obliterated the front end of my X. It was in the body shop for 7 1/2 WEEKS.

 

Since these posts are somewhat outdated, does this pricing still seem valid? I was rear-ended this weekend (grrrrr)!

 

LuvMy, look on e-bay. There are brand new bumpers going for around $400. Then you spend another $100 or so getting it painted and you can have a brand new bumper for around $500 or so. If you can find a used one that is already painted, you can possibly get down around $300.

Granted, I would be pulling the bumper cover off and seeing what damage may be present under the cover. That may drive the costs way up depending on what was damaged. If it only hurt the bumper cover, then you can possibly get some good quotes and then do the work yourself and get a few bucks in return.

 

what color is your car? I have a few in good shape that I can package up and ship out and save you a few hundred if you don't mind a scratch or 2.
