Default Costs of ownership

There has been lots of talk on the list about the costs to repair problems with X-Types. On the one hand that's bad, but on the other, since these cars really seem to be pretty reliable, maybe it isn't such a big issue.

However, that got me wondering how cost of ownership of these cars compares to the competing models? The X-Type is clearly intended to be in the same class of 3-series BMWs and A4 Audis. Since that is the case does anyone know how X-Type compares to those two in terms of repair costs?

One factor against the X-Type might be their relative rarity and corresponding lack of trained mechanics. More 325s/A4s more shops to fix them and corresponding competition between them. Fewer trained Jaguar mechanics => bigger bills (like Ducati motorcycles v.s., Honda for instance).

I went on the link and they satrt the calculations from 2006on. For a 2006 they show an estimate of $2700 in REPAIR costs in year 1 and an average of over $3000 in repair costs over five years. I know there were a lot more issues with the first couple years on the X in 2002-2003, but even then I can't imagine that anyone would spent anywhere close to $16,000 in repairs over five years of ownership, especially considering if you bought a 2006 new you would be under warranty for a good portion of that time. By 2006 the cars were a lot more reliable. Plus, that number is for repairs only, any routine maintenance is not in that calculation. Not sure where those numbers come from, but that is ridiculous. That would be like replacing the engine, transmission and transfer case all in five years. I can't believe that is any way based on reality.

I've had mine over 1 year. No major issues. I replaced a headlight myself and some battery cables myself. All in all, under $200 for now, and it's an 03.

But as to how it compares to BMW and Audi, I have no clue. Yet even if the Jaguar did cost a little extra, you could argue that is the price of having a brand that not everyone in the neighborhood has (meaning everyone and their cousin seems to have a BMW, Benz, or in some cases Audi). Not knocking those brands at all, but I like owning something a little less prevalent, for my area at least.

I agree with 03X about having something a little less prevalent, and it's definitely the case in my area. As far as TCO goes, I'd say that the Jag is comparable to the Benz based on my recollection my parents having a Jag and Benz at the same time. The Jag appeared to have more little issues, whereas the Benz had fewer issue but when they did crop up they were big ticket.

I couldn't agree more. That is one messed up chart.

Someone please name ONE repair the average owner would need done on any passenger car in the first year that wouldn't be covered under warranty. Their claims are insane.

Question BS on those Edmond cost figures

We've had our '03 for 3 1/2 years now and haven't come close to any of those figures not even the fuel cost. The insurance est. way off also we don't pay even 1/3 of that. Only repairs have been rear brake pads, replace coolant return hose radiator to tank and replaced cooling fan control module with a used unit. Maintenance has consisted of oil changes, coolant change and a new set of tires and battery replacement. I do all my own maintenance and repairs with the exception of the tires but with those I get a free annual rotation and balance.
For the life of me I can't see where they come up with those out landish figures.

Guys, you missed the point of my question...

What I'm wondering about is how our X-Types compare to A4s. 3-Series, C-Class, etc. Are these cars really more expensive than similar cars?

I owned a C 280 4 matic for 4 years most of which coincided with my ownership of my current x type. Like someone else said, the overall costs are about the same. Prior to that I owned an Acura TL. Acura was perhaps a tad cheaper. Here are the biggest ticket items I have had to pay on my X type by trips to the dealer:

1. Window motor + rear trailing arm bushing - 1,700
2. Interior over head console - 850
3. front door cable lock - 450
4. Front and rear control arm ( not sure what) - 600
5. Window washer tube - 250

My C type repairs were

1. Window regulator - 750
2 Radiator and pump - 1000
3. A pipe exhaust - 900
4. Wheel bearing -500 or so.
5. CD player - 700 or so

That's about all I can recall

Both cars had their usual fluid changes and other general maintenance. Overall, I prefer the x type for comfort, design and some have pointed out much more common.
1. Window regulator -
