harry, well, considering that the intake manifold gaskets do not have coolant running through them, you can scratch that one off of your list. Now, before you jump on the "bad head gasket bandwagon", lets see if we can narrow things down a little bit.

If you are suspecting a pipe joint, then I would say to get yourself a rag or some paper towels and wrap the joint in question, making sure to keep anything burnable away from the exhaust. From there, you can take the car for a 5 minute drive and see if you have any coolant on the rag when you are done.

When you say left hand side of the engine, are you referring to as you look into the engine bay or if you are in the driver's seat? I don't have my X-Type any more, so, I cannot look at the pipe in question and it is not coming into my mind. If you are referring to the left side relating to the driver's seat, then I would be going after the overflow bottle first as that is the more common problem (either broken nipple on the back side of the bottle or a crack on the underside that only leaks when the engine is up at temp). Granted, this also makes me wonder if you don't have a coolant hose that runs from the overflow bottle to the far side of the engine that may have a crack in it that could be causing what you are seeing.
