Scotty, looking, I can see the holes in the crank pulley (aka, vibration dampener), but I do not see where any bolts go in there. You only have the single bolt in the center that holds the dampener in place. That has its own special tightening procedure (note, it uses a stretch bolt and can only be used once, so, if you pulled it off, make sure you install a new one).

Scotty: To install the crankshaft pulley on your 2L diesel, first tighten all 3 bolts to 45Nm. Then tighten all 3 bolts another 120 degrees.
It's page 909 of the workshop manual, which you can download in pdf form from the bottom of the How to / Quick Links page:

Suggestion: So that we can better advise you, describe for us the X-Type you drive. Or better yet, add it to your signature by clicking on the "User CP" button at the top, left of this page (stands for User Control Panel), then click on "Settings & Options", then on "Edit Signature", and enter something like "2005 X-Type, 2L Diesel, Classic D, Right Hand Drive, Manual Transmission."

Scotty, ah, there is the problem!!!! You have the diesel. The petrol engines use a single bolt where the diesel engine uses 3 bolts.
The same note above still applies about replacing the bolts. Any time you see "turn the bolt an additional XX degrees", that is telling you that they are using the stretch bolts. In short, what is happening is you set an initial torque to ensure things are seated and have a known starting point. Then, turning the bolt the extra little bit, you are stretching the bolt (yes, the bolt gets physically longer). This takes the bolt to a spot known as the yield point. At this point, the bolt has its ultimate strength and ultimate holding strength. The down side is that once you take the bolt to this condition, it doesn't unstretch. If you use the bolt again, the next time you stretch it, you are actually taking it beyond its yield point. The bolt actually looses its strength.

hey guys, thank you both for the info. very much appreciated. Car is now back together and (touch wood) running just fine again.
Does anyone know of where I could get my hands on
1. the small plastic shield in the wheel arch that protects the crank pulley, mine appears to be missing.
2. a new plastic windshield air vent, passenger side, mine keeps popping out and rattling away. The black push button I think has seen better days and no longer holds the plastic vent in place.
oh, and a note for anyone looking to attempt replacing the crank pulley, getting your hands on a belt tensioner tool will save you much grief. Its too tight to fit a ratchet in without lowering the engine.
