crankshaft accessibility
I have a rod knock in my 2004 X Type. A friend tells me that it's possible to replace a rod bearing without removing the engine. I'm sceptical but he wants to try it and has gone so far as to obtain a new bearing. Has anyone done this? Is he going to ruin my car? Should I find a new friend? Thanks in advance.

This is the Jaguar-Forum - not the "friends are us"-advise page...
As we are "speaking" I am about to remove the transmission on my 2.5L X-Type (the transfer case, the subframe and the air intake ( to be able to suspend the engine on an engine crane, while I remove the transmission) are off already). And I have done all that already about 4 month ago. So, I am quite involved in taking the X-Type apart. When I saw your question, I thought: NO, that is not possible - but...:
Look at my thread below:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...4-2-5l-272715/
You will find there a picture of the engine from underneath with the sump oil pan removed... - looking at that, I'd say: Maybe it is possible, if you can remove a few more parts from under the car, which are still in your way.
Also, have a read in my thread in regards how difficult it is to remove the sump oil pan: Either you drill that hole, or you remove the transfer case as well, and on the way you will find 2-4 bolts, which a sane person would classify as "impossible to remove"...
In line with my limited knowledge about cars and engines, I think it is impossible to get to the pistons from underneath the car.
PS: As you did not write, which X-Type (2.1, 2.5, 3.0) nor where you are, my reply above relates to the US X-Type versions, i.e. 2.5 and 3.0 (i.e. AWD & transfer case)

@ Yorta: I got no idea, what you are on about! Really, I do not!
doc had a question, to which I replied to the best of my knowledge, hoping to really help him with my answer!
Is there any chance you are reading a different text than the text, which I wrote?
Do you care to elaborate, which of my sentences or words has been chosen wrong????

That's perfect! My friend said he already knew about drilling a hole for that bolt. I think he's full of bovine excrement. BTW I have a 3.0 and I live in the US. Thanks for the reply, I may just let him have a go at it.

Alright, doc. Glad I could help. I assume you also do not know, what Yorta was on about above?
I wonder, if he was unable to see the humor on my "friends are us"-intro, even though I clearly marked it with "
" - which is a clear sign of not being meant serious - which was nothing else but a completion of your joke asking " Should I find a new friend? " - which I am sure was equally not being meant seriously....

Based on those photos from Peter's excellent reply, I think its doable providing the crank and rod are smooth and only the bearing is worn. How many miles? Maybe check and replace all six "while you're in there" ?
Please post photos to show how it goes!
Cheers, Dave

First if you attempt this plan on changing ALL the rod bearings. No point in going that far to do just one. Think about it? The other bearings have gone thru the same conditions the failed one has. How close are the rest to failure? We don't know.
As posted above this will all hinge on the condition of the rod journal when you take it apart.
Can you fill us in on how it spun? Low oil? High miles on engine?

Dave, it has a bit over 100,000 miles on the engine. My friend says he can polish the crank journal but if the rod is "egged" it's a lost cause. We shall see. And I see humor in everything; Peter's post was spot on and humorous to boot. Maybe Yorta was referring to how nasty the photos were. Lots of oil and grease!
p.s. it might be a good idea to replace all six bearings I'll keep everyone posted.

Peter, perhaps I was a bit hasty with my response but, yes, it was the first statement that annoyed me. I didn't think the blue face had much to say about your attempt at humour. Maybe I don't quite understand your style of humour, as it isn't quite an Australian one. I apologise, but I do think that that start to your answer was a bit off-putting. Your actual answer did give some comfort to the original poster.
@ Yorta: So, we are good now!? Yes, it certainly looks like there is a "understanding the humor"-issue at hand here.
And it looks like you do not understand "
". Do you watch Big Bang Theory? Maybe I should have written Sheldon's "Bazinga!"
