Andrew, are you sure you want to do this mod? I only ask as most people do not understand what it can affect on their car. when you do the pulley mod, you are "gaining" some power by slowing the accessories down. If you get a kit with the "alternator overspeed pulley", you are not gaining, you are simply changing out parts and lightening your wallet. The pulley mod works on slowing things down so they suck less power from the engine. What does this mean to you? Simple, the power steering is not going to give you as much assistance. So, in a parking lot, you are going to have to fight the steering wheel more (highway will be just fine). In the summer when you need the A/C, you are going to get less cooling when moving slowly in traffic. In the winter, your alternator is going to produce less power since its output is directly related to how fast it turns (under about 2,000 RPM using the factory pulleys, the alternator is not able to reach maximum output). So, you may find that either you are going to be running partly on the battery which can lead to other issues or you are going to overheat the alternator and essentially cook that if you keep lots of electrical loads on it and are driving slowly.
I am not telling you not to get the mod, I am simply pointing out things that most people do not take into consideration. The pulley mod is great for drag racers as they are not worried about A/C or how much the alternator is putting out. But, for an everyday driver, it can potentially cause more problems than it is making better.

Reading between the lines here Thermo I am guessing that as Andrew has a diesel engined X-Type the crank pulley is starting to delaminate and is causing the belt/tensioner to make a noise.
There is a beefed up version of the pulley available from Jaguar to stop the problem from happening again.

rapala, thanks. Did not know the diesels suffered from something like that. All my experience is with the petrol versions. If that is is what he is after, then yes, but all means use it. I was commenting on the under drive pulleys that some people use to get more power out of their vehicles. THose can be a good thing, but they can also be just as bad too.

Thanks for the replys, but Rapala is correct, its a diesel engine and the bottom pulley rubber is delaminating. Its a known fault and Jag supply a mod kit with a beefed up pulley, and modded inner wing splash panel.
I really do need to add my car to the signature. Is this mostly a US forum?
