Default Cut Bait?

I've got an 04 X Type 2.5 Manual with a broken rod. It's been sitting for the past year and a half. I have finally saved up the 5K that it would take to replace the engine and clutch (not that it needs it, but yeah, why wouldn't you?).

I'm looking for some advice. Should I fix her, or put my money toward another car?

I fear that if I get the engine replaced, the fact that I let it sit for so long will cause other problems. I also think that the value of the car probably won't be any greater than what I spent to get it fixed.

If I decide to get rid of her, is there a market for X Types that need to have their engine replaced? If so, Where? How much might I hope to get?

I think if I can get even a little bit of money out it, I would lean toward getting rid of it.

Thoughts?

Agreed. Part her out. Do you have the double cup holder center console? If so, I'll take it off your hands.

My wife's sat for 2 years before I could get to the engine swap. Everything worked out fine for me. I will say if you replace the engine, it will not start on the old gas you may still have in the tank. Get it out of there.

Unless the vehicle has particular sentimental value to you and your wife then crunch the numbers. Does putting $5K into it keep you at or near the value of a vehicle in similar condition.

Also factor in:

1. depends on how and where it has been sitting - in a garage under a dust sheet or outside. Vehicles deteriorate with standing and storage conditions play a big part in how fast or extensive this will be.

2. any other repairs or replacements need doing that will add to the cost

£5k will buy you a very nice, newer replacement vehicle..... break the thing for parts, or take the overly generous 3k offer above..... and get another.

Too right. I think I only have about 3500USD in ours including the cost of the good used engine (which has turned out very good so far, over 6000 miles since installation), a full 4 wheel brake job including new calipers, pads and rotors, and a set of 4 brand new tires. It's like I got the dead car for free. I think you can see in pics I posted elsewhere, I ain't hurtin'. If yours doesn't look as fine as ours, you probably need to scrap it or take the fabulous 3k offer and move on.
