Default RE: Definitive "how to" for HIDs in the fogs

I bought mine from mydepots on ebay. I had a really bad experience with them in relation to getting my lights but I'd still recommend. The kit seemed of a pretty good quality (i know nothing about them, this opinion is more based on the assumption of what quality should appear/feel like.) The only problem I ever had with them was because of cold Michigan weather. On occasion one light wouldn't turn on with the automatic lights, if I turned the lights off and back on it came on right away and I never had any other problems. In the future I may have had problems but that was in the future. Instead of paying to have a warranty replacement sent to me I decided to just deal with it. The kit they sell is too cheap to worry about it breaking. My buddy spent nearly $200 on his pilot kit (I think that's what it was) and his did the same thing as mine but they wouldn't turn on at all when he turned his lights on and off. $80-90 seems kind of high considering mydepot has bi-xenon for 99 shipped. This is the h1 kit with 4300k for $60 shipped. For that price you might as well buy 2 kits and have the other sitting around.

Here are pics of my kit (if you want bigger pics either download from picasawebalbums or pm me with your email and i'll send it)

Sorry the pics suck...I was too excited to take pics of them sitting in the package!

The above pic doesn't show how blue the actual 6k kit is...

i have never tried this: when you turn on the high beams, the main beams stay on? i don't know why that surprises me, but it does. Has anyone put the HID's in the high beams? and i second the mydepots guy on ebay.

Nope, wasn't me. I did them in the mains and fogs, with color matched LED running lights.

I don't know if HIDs in the high beams would be all that practical. I don't think anyone drives around with their high beams on for long enough to justify having them there..

Hmmm...wonder who it was...I know somebody did...my bad...Yeah I'd agree on the impractical part as you never use the brights (at least I don't) and when I have it wasn't for very long...I wonder how people feel about hids in the fogs with main beam hids! That has to be freaking bright coming at ya!

It's actually not too bad, as long as they're aimed alright. When I did my install, I definitely bumped the beams down a bit. The pics make the brightness seem pretty intimidating, but it's not that bad. I've been wanting to get someone to drive my car past me a couple times to see how it looks, but just haven't got around to it.

I'd love to do it on my mountaineer but I'd imagine I'd have to turn the headlights way down to not tick people off. My buddy has 6k hids in both and his are incredibly bright and I'd imagine people aren't too happy when they are coming at him. I find that some people will just bright you just because they are whiners though.

I currently installed a set of 5k hids and some led's in the next lens over. What do you guys think would make nice for my fogs without going hid?

Nothing will match up to the hids w/out going hids. I had silverstars in my fogs which are nearly as expensive as hids, they looked no different than regular sylvania bulbs. You could try going for a colored bulb or rainbow bulb to change the color but they wont be any brighter than the regular halogens (probably more dim if anything.) The aftermarket bulbs don't blow in the fogs like they do on the main beams though so your in the clear for adding fake blue crappy bulbs if you wanted.

Personally if you don't want to shell out the 60 bucks for hids and the work involved keep em off unless you need them (fog) and enjoy the hids....oh yeah BTW-

I will get some pics tonight for sure, has anyone ever tried ambers for the fogs, not too sure how that will look. I remember my uncles old benz had them, they were bright, well they really helped you see but did not blind you at the same time.

By amber do you mean amber hids? I've never seen amber colored normal halogens. I'd say the 3k hids would look pretty sweet IMO (they'd look like lexus) or are you talking more of a real orange/amber and not yellowish?

Old thread, I know, but I have an '04 with a H11 kit and I don't see how they install without a mod. I did a "dry run" and they don't lock in straight from the box. Will need to mod the stock elbow to install as far as I can see. Am I missing something?
