MIke, I guess just to make sure we are covering all the bases, you do have the message center that displays the ODO and as you press the TRIP button, changes to show you the various read outs. Next, I would say to try depressing the TRIP button, holding it there for a few seconds, then rotating the key to start the engine, then as soon as you see the "ENGINEERING TEST" or "TEST MODE" indication to release the TRIP button (if you hold the TRIP button too long after the message comes up, it will go back to normal operation).
If this doesn't help, then there is something else going on.

Mike, to be sure beyond a shadow of a doubt, yes, start the engine. I am not recalling clearly if you can do the diagnostic with only taking the car to RUN. I want to say YES you can, but then there is this little voice going "you have tried that and it didn't work". But, I know for 100% surety that starting the engine will put it into the test mode.
