Default Dip & fog lights problem

Hi all,
My car is X Type 2.2D , 2007 and the problem is as follows:

When the main lights have to be working occurs that the dip lights are permanent on (there is no difference if the related switch is on or not) and front fog ligths don't work if they're switch on.

All fuses are ok and the related relays too.

Does anybody know what is happening?

A lot of Thanks in advance

It sounds like a US or French setup...dips are always on; fogs only work with dips, using mains will extinguish the fogs for as long as the mains are on.

I suspect much of the EU follows the same pattern.

CONSUEGRA, the main lights and fog lights share a common relay. The relay is defaulted to the fog lights so they can be turned on any time the running lights are on. But, when you attempt to light the main beams, the relay actuates and it removes power from the fog lights and applies it to the main beams. This is done to prevent exceeding 4 beams from lighting. What I mean by this is that when you have your dip beams on, you have 2 beams projecting light in front of the car. When you turn on the fogs, you are adding 2 more beams (for a total of 4 beams). If you were to also turn on the main beams, you would have a total of 6 beams of light. In most places, this is considered having too much light in front of the vehicle and a hazzard to oncoming drivers (not that you should have your main beams on with other cars approaching anyways).

With this being said, if you drive out in the middle of nowhere and you find that having more light as being beneficial, there are ways around that. Please let me know what you are attempting to accomplish and I am sure I can come up with a way to get you what you are after. Your cheapest bet would most likely be to simply upgrade your main beams to say 50W HID bulbs, but this would require a little bit of wiring modification. This would give you tons of light for those dark roads, but keep in mind that this also probably will leave you open to legal issues as you will have illegal headlights on your vehicle. Like I said, let me know what you are wanting to accomplish and I can help you get to a viable solution.
