Default DIY - Hood Insulation Replacement

Hood insulation (Jaguar calls it bonnet liner BTW) tattered and sagging? Here's about $150 well spent to sharpen up your engine compartment.
Parts needed:
1 C2S44059 Bonnet Liner
22 C2Z3567 Push Rivet (I bought 10, thinking I'd reuse some of the old ones). I bought from local Jag dealer - and glad I did as the new liner is very bulky.

Tools needed:
Medium Phillips screwdriver
Trim removal tool(s)
Cleaning supplies

Steps:
1. Cover engine with an old sheet to catch falling debris from old liner. I did not do this, so had a little extra clean-up.

2. Take down old liner by removing the push fasteners. Back out the screw first, then get underneath the flange with your trim tool to pop out the fastener. You can also grab the screw head with pliers and gently rock side to side while pulling. My liner was so rotten that I ended up pulling it free of some of the fasteners, then removing those.

3. Clean up debris that fell on engine, then clean the underside of the hood. Take your time, as you prolly ain't coming back this way again. You might even want to put a little light wax on hood underside!

4. When I compared new liner to old it looked a little different. No worries though, as it fit perfectly. I inserted the fasteners from liner middle outwards, but it's not critical; just take your time to line up the holes.

5. I'm pleased with how the job came out. Took me a couple of hours total, mostly for the cleanup/prep.

This is excellent! I actually went out and looked at my wife's car and....there's no liner at all! Just a nice clean underside of the bonnet.

Would installing this lower the noise level inside the car?

Sure it will. I think it'll also protect the paint on both sides of hood from effects of engine heat. My guess is that the original liner on your car got so tattered that someone removed it altogether for appearance reasons. Mine was falling apart in places.

That is a sweet looking install. Nice photo work too. Did I read right it was all less than $150.00. I also like the look of the updated liner.

Jaguar dealer charged me $111.50 for the liner and $1.10 each for the rivets. Neither in stock so took a couple of days to get them. For a bulky item like the liner I think dealership purchase works out better than having it shipped - too easy for damage methinks. The new design liner also covers more area; I like how it tucks away the windshield washer tubing. Looks neater.

Sorry guys, for digging up the old thread, but it is another, none Jag part option to replace your under bonnet liner.

Gonzo, has sadly departed us, but his legacy lives on.

read and enjoy.

RIP.

I will have to spend more time on the X type board....... If you let me......

While you're in there, why not look into sound deadening and/or heat dispersion technology -

I've been looking at Dynamat (or other variants) for the purposes of improving my sound system and reduce the significant cabin noise. I'm pretty sure a few more dollars invested in technology designed for this purpose (under the liner or in place of) would pay back in reduced engine heat and engine noise.

Hello Vic,
Please excuse me, I'm 4 years down the line. Did you have to drill holes in your bonnet to accommodate this bonnet liner? I just purchased a new bonnet liner for my 2005 x-type, the specs on this liner appears the same as you have fitted but holes don't aline and the jet tubes for washer seem odd placement.
Please advise, if you care to. I see you have sold your Jaguar.

Sincerely
Tower

Tower,

No I didn't have to modify the liner at all. The holes lined up perfectly. I wouldn't think this part is different on a RHD car. Did you buy the factory part or aftermarket? We enjoyed the X Type while we had her, but had to thin the fleet.

Hello Vic

Many thanks for your prompt reply, very kind.
Purchased my liner from Jaguar, apparently this item has been revised/redesigned three times over past 10 years until it no longer lines up with my '05 x-type.
Carpet cleaned and sprayed with black dye the original and reinstalled. It sags and ugly, thankfully it's tucked away and not seen.

Best to you,
Tower
