Default DIY mesh grille

Wondering if anyone here has made their own mesh grille. Seems like it would be pretty straight forward. For about $25 you could get a universal piece of wire mesh. Seems like a good deal when the fitted inserts are like $100.

Unless you use the exact, correct material and install it carefully, it will look "home made." I have seen a few and you can spot them a mile away.

Just sayin'......

Yea that is my worry too. I don't want to throw some Home Depot mesh on there. Maybe I will just look for some oem mesh. What I really want is that full Mina mesh grille with the emblem, but those are like $300. I may eventually get one, who knows. Still have a lot on my upgrade wish list before I need a $200 or $300 grille though.

NOOOOOOO! Don't DIY this one. It will look terrible unless you plan on removing the whole front bumper and integrating mounts for the grille on the back of the bumper where they can't be seen. But then you'll have to remove the bumper whenever you have an issue with the grille... It's kinda a lose, lose situation.

04Xtype, from someone that has made their own mesh grille on another vehicle, the best advice that I can tell you is to make yourself a mold of what you are wanting so you have something to bend the mesh around. What I mean by this is you want to take some say 3/4" plywood and cut it to fit where you want, but minus about an 1/8" all the way around (this is where the mesh will end up). You will also probably end up shaving say a 1/4 into a slight arch so you can bend the plywood to the correct bend to match the lines of the car. From there, you can staple the mesh to the wood and then bend the edges with a tool and get the fitment right. To free hand it takes either a very steady hand and lots of forethought or lots of luck. I will not mention how pieces of mesh I went through.

It seems that there is more that can go wrong, and look ****-poor if you try. Go ahead, but if you think it will save you $75 or so, why? Isn't your time and effort worth something. I got a grill, complete with frame and growler from a jag site for $125 or so, including shipping. It looks great, and I've had it for 5 or so years. Just a thought.....
