Default Engine light stays on.

2005 Type X Estate 3.0 engine light on! Disconnected battery cables engine light stays on, replaced gas cap engine light stays on, diagnostic instrument indicated to replaced upper left bank O2 sensor (pre-cat), we replaced the sensor then reset computer, started engine light stayed OFF! Drove distance, parked, restarted and engine light stays on. After reset of computer, does it take a while.... say several driving sessions before the engine light will finally stay off? Open to suggestions, thoughts. Thank you. John

Take and post OBD codes. "Clearing" means what? By OBD or battery disconnection? If they reoccurre after clearing with OBD, obviously the underlying cause has not been fixed.

+1 what are the codes?

Stop clearing them. They self-clear when fault fixed. Use that as your guide for now.

John,

I've deleted your duplicate post of this question from US - Northeast Region. This is the correct place to post technical questions about you model. Please DO NOT multiple post the same question in different forums.

Disconnecting the battery (a hard reset) only clears adaptations held in volatile memory such as fuel trims. It does not clear stored DTC's triggering the MIL. The only way to do this is to fix the cause. If you clear the codes but don't fix the cause, they will reset after a designated number of "trips".

Graham

Default Engine light stays on

Codes 0171, P0174, P1582, P0455. These codes didn't really help! I replaced the gas cap ($20- likely didn't need to), I replaced left bank 02 sensor ($99- likely didn't need to). Shop re-set the computer, engine light stayed off. Parked started up an light comes on again. I realize you have to drive motorcar until it runs through the programs which I did. Out of frustration in chasing these codes per engine light on issue, we ran a "smoke test" ($98). We discovered the booster vacuum hose ($149.00 - brake booster) and 0 ring ($4) were the cause of engine light on issue. After repair, we ran engine for period, road test then we did a second "smoke test" to insure we were correct. Problem solve engine light OFF. I hope this MAY help others with the Engine Light On problem. Firm believer in doing smoke test first. Any additional thoughts would be helpful. Thank you for your courtesies. John

Hhhhmmmm......well p0171 & p0174 are nearly ALWAYS vacuum leaks (the big 3) if you took the initiative to do a search here there are threads with descriptions, how to test, pictures, fixes. Thus the earlier admonition to search for your codes.

You paid $149.00 for the brake booster hose with teh check valve? That is like $50 or less. I think Dell posted a link to somewhere selling it for like $17. Where did you buy it from?

Glad you got it fixed. However, The P0455 will likely come back at some point, as that is EVAP related.

Smoke test $98, booster $149, O Ring $4

Forum procedure =

Starter fluid leak test $8, booster $18, O Ring $4

Yup cost effective alternative.

OEM part from local Jaguar dealership. I didn't bat an eye because the mechanic makes his money on parts (they need to make a living), not labor. Additionally they performed 2 smoke tests, install O ring thus fixed issue for $175 total. That's a deal. I've done business w/ same mechanic for yrs, it all comes back, treated very fairly on other family motorcars. Not chasing erroneous codes! Dell, I can read very well. Frankly, to each his own, I won't pilot any aircraft with aftermarket parts. That's it gentleman.

Generally you can buy the genuine OEM brake booster hose for about $50 or less. I don't know that there would even be an aftermarket part like that. Glad you got it fixed and you like and trust your mechanic, but if he charged you that much for that part, it seems beyond excessive. If you are happy that is all that matters.

If anything comes up in the future, get the codes read and then do a search on here. If something ever happened to an X-Type chances are it has been discussed on here. Some things might be simple enough to fix yourself and there are a number of places where you can get reasonably priced parts. Also, a lot of helpful, friendly people willing to help point you in the right direction to help you save some time, money and aggrevation.
