Hello people,
I'm currently running a 2003 x-type with the 2.5 V6 and it's developed a odd rattle.
Only happens in gear and under load,i.e on acceleration or pulling uphill, but not all the time.
I always use the same fuel, recent oil change , sounds a bit like pinking but much louder
Is this likely to be serious and/or terminal? Or is it something I can fix myself without lifting the engine out? I've heard stories of faulty VVT solenoids.....
Doesn't seem to appear past 3000 rpm.....
Any help would be appreciated
Andy, have you recently replaced the O2 sensor back by the firewall? From what you describe, it sounds like the heat shield over the exhaust manifold between the engine and the firewall is loose, causing your rattle.
Not done anything other than the oil change, what's odd about it is that it doesn't happen every day.
Best way to describe the the noise is like camshaft rattle
Andy, then I would say to get a second person and have them apply the brake firmly as they use a little bit of gas (load up the motor, just don't go too hard as we don't want to break motor mounts) and then with the hood/bonnet open see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. But, what you are describing is sounding a lot like the heat shield.
