Default Engine RPM - Highway Speeds - 3.0 Auto

Hey guys!

On my 2006 X, I'm finding that the RPM at highway speeds seems high. Keep in mind, I've only had the car about a month, so maybe my expectactions are off, but here is what I get:

70 MPH - 2,500 RPM
80 MPH - 3,000 RPM

This is on dry concrete, flat road, less than 5 MPH wind at an altitude of only +/- 600 feet. The car is stock, oil has just been changed and air filter is new as are the tires.

The 2004 Saab 9-3 ARC 4 cylinder 2.0 turbo, auto (that I traded for the X) ran at around 2,600 RPM at 80 MPH.

Let me know what y'all think. I"m coming up on the end of my factory warranty and if there's a problem, I need to bring it to the dealer's attention ASAP.

Thanks!

Hmmmm...

My wife's '01 Maxima (3.0, auto) runs around 2,100 RPM at 80 MPH.

Any idea why? I'm obviously not an expert...

A cars rpm at any speed is dependent on final gearing. When you are accelerating the car is fairly peppy due to a numerical high first gear and rear gear! Makes for decent acceleration and poor fuel mileage!
The other cars are not geared the same. That is all.

I believe it also counts what mode you are using at your tranny ( sport, eco ) . Normally I would not see any "concrete" difference but in regards to acceleration it does make a difference

I will agree with the others, those RPM figures are normal. My 2007 9-3 2.0t does run at lower RPM than the X in higher gears - due to the final drive ratio. The X's top gear just isn't that tall......

Yup, that is normal. I had a 2002 9/3 and the rpms were pretty low while cruising. The X is a lot different. I wish they would have had a 6 speed instead of a 5 speed just for the highway mileage. I bet you could get a couple more mpg with another gear, although I don't think it's that bad to begin with. It's all a balancing act between performance and mpg. Your car is fine TX. Enjoy it without regrets.
