Error code 1796 (kickdown switch circuit malfunction)
Hi, a happy Jag owner from Finland here.
I have a X-Type 2.5 AWD, year 2004. I've owned it for three years and it has been a great car and running flawlessly.
However, I received this error P1796 (with a generic error code reader), which indicates a kick down switch circuit malfunction. This error occurred right after I changed my wheels. However in that same trip to tire change I used the kickdown twice and had relatively high RPM for a while.
My car's computer says in Finnish "suuntavakausongelma", "vaihdelaatikko-ongelma" which translate to "stability issue" and "transmission issue".
I have neither. Everything is running well and the kickdown is working. Car is running normally.
I also got the dreaded P1647 problem with this reader (which is the well known upstream Lambda sensor (Bank 2). That's strange as I didn't have the engine light lit before.
I cleared the other code but I'm not sure the other one got cleared with this generic POS at all. There is no engine light when I start the car... but after a while it comes back (after another start).
Three questions before I take it to an (expensive) Jag specialist:
1. Is there a specific kickdown switch circuit somewhere? Tried to Google but couldn't find anything.
2. Could that (P1796) error be caused by one of those four (damaged?) ABS/wheel speed sensors? So that the gearbox receives information of a "wrong wheel speed" when one of these wheel sensors is dead - and it reacts by giving a "stability error" message. Perhaps I accidentally hit one of these wheel sensors or their wiring when I switched the tires.
3. Could these two error messages be related to eachother somehow?
Thanks in advance.

Attached is an excerpt from the tech manual for Code 1796. The fault shows an open connection in the CAN Network. The ABS sensors are a part of that network and since it is the area worked in prior to the trouble code. I would start their first for broken leads to wheel sensors, malfunctioning sensor, dirty sensor.
If you go to the "How To Section" of the x400 forum and search for the following heading. [b]Workshop Manual in PDF. (thanks to LCGI)
You can download the tech manual and look thru section 418 to troubleshoot your problem.
