the fan won't stop after switching the engine off
please, don't laugh at me, I am a single mother of an ill kid and a widow, doing whatever I can to survive and a complete idiot when it comes to cars. My xtype is a great car but it is not new and throws an issue after an issue. This time it is the fan that all of a sudden did not stop for an hour after I drove for 40 km on a hot day. I parked at a shop and went away for an hour, came back and heard the fan noise. I added some cooling liquid, a bit of oil thinking that it could help but it did not. The engine was not hot but the fan was working like mad cooling nothing.
The running fan almost emptied the battery, I went back home and had to take the battery out (the fan was still working all the way while I was driving and stopped only when I took the battery out). Now I am not sure if this is a sensor of some sort of anything else. I hope I will get some answers from a mechanic next week, clearly something has to be replaced but for now I have no idea what.
I am in Portugal now and have no idea where I can order parts at reasonable prices as local mechanics seriously think that I print money while I have nothing to eat once a month or so since all the money goes towards supporting my kid.
Please, give me a hand with the info, I would be really grateful, thank you

xtypewagon25, sounds like you are suffering from the infamous bad fan module. You do not mention the temperature gauge reading high. So, we can eliminate that sensor as being bad. Now, this is where we need a little more information about your car to make sure we send you on the correct path. I am assuming by your screen name that you have the 2.5L V6 motor in your car. If not, please let me know what engine you do have. The second, and more important, what year was your car built. I ask this as there are 2 different fan control modules that you can potentially get and I want to make sure that you get the correct one and not have to buy other stuff to make the wrong one work (yes, they make conversion wiring, lets keep this simple). Where this gets very critical is if you have a 2004 vehicle. If you do, then I need you to look in the driver's door jam area and you will find the build sticker for the car. On that, it will say something about "build day". It will list a month and a year. Include that too. Just so you know so you know in the future, Jaguar did a wiring change to the X-Type in April 2004. So, all cars made between 2001 and March 2004 have 1 wiring harness, those made after March 2004 have a different harness. As part of the new harness, Jaguar fixed some of the common issues that were happening (ie, fan modules failing a lot).
You can look at the fan module and determine which one you have. The earlier ones have 3 wires going to the fans. The later ones have 4 wires. I do not know how you are with being a handyman, but this repair is pretty straight forward and can probably be done by yourself. If you open the hood/bonnet of the car and rest your hands just inside of where the hood/bonnet latches to the car, if you stick your fingers over the edge, your right hand is going to be more than likely touching the fan module. If you look under the lip there, you will see a finned module about 8x8 cm in size screwed to the radiator. That is what I am talking about. There is 1 plug on one side and 2 plugs on the opposite side. You can pop those off, undo the one or 2 screws holding it in place and then it will fall out of the car. Install is the reverse. Worst case, find a neighbor that is handy with cars and offer to buy him a six pack of his favorite beer if he puts in the module. You will probably get a new best friend out of it.
The bad side of things is atleast from what I found for a 2004+ vehicle, the modules are running around $500 USD if you buy brand new. If you throw in a second 6 pack of beer, the neighbor may be willing to go to a local wrecking yard and see if he can pull one from there. That should drop the price to say around $100-150 USD. I know still not cheap, but much more tolerable on the money.
One other option you may want to consider if you do not trust your neighbors is to call up a local college, see if they have an automotive class. If so, normally they are willing to take in cars like yours to be a learning project for the more senior students. They will be observed by a teacher (normally a professional mechanic) and in a lot of cases, it will cost you only the price of the parts and a donation to the college (how much, this can vary). the down side to this is that the repair time is normally about twice as long due to the teaching that is going on. BUt, this is a fairly quick repair, so, you should be able to drop off the car in the morning and get it back later that same day.
HOpefully this makes you feel a little better.

thank you so much for taking your time to help. I have checked and the car is from 2006, 2.5, V6 Executive SW 5P (whatever that means). Portugal is way too small for having a neigbour like this, most locals won't move a finger unless they get paid a million or two
There are no car yards here that I know of and they would be a long way from me for sure, we live very remotely since renting is dear.
I have searched Autodoc app that I was just advised to use and the only option there is 300 euros! Insane
I am completely lost, we live remotely so going anywhere is a challenge to say the least.

X-type, fortunately for you, this is a fairly easy fix when it comes to mechanical ability needed. I am not sure how comfortable you are about taking stuff apart. But, this would be something more on the easy scale from what I can tell. Also, not sure what tools you may have laying around the house. I guess another option you may want to consider is going to a local auto parts store and simply asking them if there is a bakc yard mechanic that would like to make an extra $50 for a simple repair. See what they say.
To do the repair, this is the sequence of actions that you will need to do:
-disconnect both battery terminals
-unbolt the battery from the car (single bar holding the battery in place)
-remove the battery from the car
-undo the screw holding the fan controller to the radiator assembly
-Remove the 3 connectors from the module that was being held down by the screw. This will take lifting up a tab as you pull back on the connector to get it off.
-Take the new controller and re-attach the plugs like the old controller had them on.
-Using the screw, attach the controller to the car
-Install the battery into the car
-install hold down bar
-install the 2 battery posts (fan should remain off at this point).
As for a controller, I would say to take a look at the following. I know they are not the cheapest, but as other members have found, going with the cheapest normally ended up with them having to buy the more expensive controller anyways. So, lets keep as much money in your pocket as possible. Before buying any that I recommend, you will need to write the seller to see if they will ship the part to you. They should be able to, but not all sellers want to deal with shipping things overseas.
