Front Strut Advice
I need to install new front struts. I just looked at the manual and it says I need a special tool to drop the subframe, remove the axle and be wary of the rear subframe mounting nut. I have seen other write ups on this and other forums that are not as complex. It appeared you merely had to loosen the the rear subframe bolt to get clearance. Has anyone ever done this job who can tell me the easiest way to do it and what pitfalls I may encounter.
Its not as hard as it looks on paper. Just need to make sure that you can loosen the back sub frame bolt as they have been known to rust and break off.(pb blaster is your friend) When you get them loose best thing is to take them most of the way out, then loosen the main bolt holding the bottom of the strut. Then take off your brake line and sway bar link. Next what I do is use a ratchet strap and put around the lower control arms across the under part of car and ratchet tight. Then get a heavy hammer.(3 pounds or so) and tap down on the spindle keeping clear of the sensor. After a few hits it should be free. then take off your 3 bolts that hold it on and your done. Just remember when re install to be careful of the set tab on the back of the strut.make sure its centered in the back.
Good luck,
