I've begun to notice a speed-sensitive rumbling noise from the front of my car. It happens when the steering wheel is turned to the right. When the car is going straight or left I only hear tire noise but when following a right hand bend I hear the noise. I've been hearing it for a while now but I can't really tell if it has gotten any louder, but it is has it's not by much.

All driving behavior and braking has not changed, it's just that I can hear the noise if I turn the radio down and pay attention (my wife noticed it last night and asked me about it...).

Does anyone have any ideas? I would have thought that if is were a wheel-bearing that it would be making a lot more noise by now.

Oh, I've already had one wheel bearing replaced as well as the transfer-case so I'm familiar with their calls for help.

I would point to cv joints in your front axles. Do a search on youtube for "bad cv axles" and see if that is your problem. Not really too hard to replace either, just remove the hub and replace the cv. On a honda, a bad cv sounds like a piece of plastic or rubber that clicks really loud.

 

Bad CVs make a 'clicking" noise at low speed when turning. A rumble could be an older tire has hardened a bit(had that happen with some Bridgestone Potenzas), a wheel bearing going bad, or possibly control arm/strut bushings.

 

Just heard from the dealer, left front wheel bearing. Would be $485/US$ if it wasn't covered by my warranty.

Oh, outside the dealer this morning was an XJ12 and an XJS waiting for service. Inside, according to the order writer, were two '60s XKEs being serviced.

I found it interesting that this dealer (Woburn Jaguar, Woburn MA) obviously is able to service all Jaguar models/years.

pab, you can get that done sooooo much cheaper. Buy a wheel bearing on rockauto.com or ebay and go from there.

Tru dat, but it was covered by my extended warranty so no direct cost to me. I just quoted the price for information purposes.

The rear rotors/pads, well that ~$600 is out of my pocket...

By comparison, I just had the rear calipers/rotors/pads/h-fluid replaced on my wife's '06 Buick Lacrosse at a highly regarded tire/brake shop near where I live, $1100!
