Gas Mileage with Sport Mode?
Hey guys I was just wondering what type of gas mileage you guys are getting when you have sport mode on? I usually drive with it off and I average about 19-20 mpg. I was wondering does the car do better with sport mode on or off? I remember running one tank with it and one tank without when I first got the car. I found I got about 1.5 mpg better with sport mode off. But I was wondering what the rest of you have found. I have an 05 X-Type 3.0.

I get 18-21mpg city & 28-30mpg highway in sport mode. I used to drive in sport mode all the time. Lately I've switched to normal mode in town because I found out that the trans shifts to 5th @ 40mph where as this shift is at about 50-55mph in sport mode. But I haven't really checked to see if there been any improvement in fuel mileage by doing this. If there is any difference it probably won't be much since most of our city speed limits are 35mph and below so most driving is still in 4th gear.

I'd have to say using sport mode has little to do with gas mileage. Sport mode only extends the shift to a higher RPM under WOT. I keep mine in sport mode all the time and get about 22MPG. Mine is in 5th gear at 40mph in sport mode. I don't think sport mode does anything to part throttle shifts--at least I have not found it to.

Or get a manual, then you have the best of both worlds. When it's warm out and if I'm just cruising along in city traffic I can get about 24mpg. With the gearing and torque of the engine I can run it in 5th gear at a bit over 30 miles an hour without it chugging. Certainly won't set any acceleration records, but when you are in stop and go traffic from light to light it doesn't matter anyway. I skip shift a lot also. Seems to help with the mileage as well. Kind of makes up for those times when you have an open freeway on ramp, especially when it's one of those circular ones. Man, it's fun seeing the cars in your rear view mirror get small trying to keep up.

Yeah, for me the manual was the way to go. The first one I drove was an automatic sport model. Nice, but I always liked a manual transmission and seeing that the 0-60 was a half second less made the decision easier. What really sold me was the interior with the carbon fiber and alcantara. I thought it looked awesome and very unique. So, I waited until I found one that had both. Like you said, a manual in a 3.0 liter is really REALLY hard to find and with that interior it's even tougher. I think I looked on Cars.com and Autotrader for about 6 months. I found one with 42K at a good price (paid $14,400) in Missouri, about 500 miles from where I live. Got a cheap flight and went and got it. Great shakedown ride coming home to Milwaukee. Beautiful autumn weather, stereo blasting away, the leaper kind of pointing the way and it just puts you in that zen-like state where everything is right in the world. Been in love ever since. Since then I have seen only one manual and that had the wood interior. I wish I knew how many manual 3.0 liters they made in 2005 and how many had that interior package. I know they built about 10,900 in 2005 and I would guess there might be less then 1000 manuals and even fewer with the carbon fiber/alcantara, so it's even more fun knowing I won't see too many like it.

I get 16mpg city in normal auto with sport mode off. On the highway I've gotten 28mpg.
But 99% of the time I'm driving with sport mode on using J-gate and rev matching the downshifts by blipping the accelerator. So I usually only average 12-13 mpg with A/C off and 11-12 mpg with A/C on.
I did average 8.9 mpg for an entire tank once when I had the moonroof open, windows down, ac on high, flooring it around. That was fun. lol

Entry ramps
I use the J-gate at 42+mph to safely and quicky enter the freeway ramps here in Dallas. The only other options are being crashed from behind or risk running out of entrance ramp length.

I have the 02 X automatic and the Sport button doesn't seem to do anything. But I never thought it moved the shift points which does make for a bit more sporty feel. ON or OFF I average the same about 22MPG. I have a balance of city/highway. I race down the freeway to get to the city, then stop and go. Average miles per day is about 40. I tested mine for 1 month off then 1 month on.
I also have an 04 S automatic. Same engine, v6. When you press the sport button the RPMs lift, and the vehicle runs at higher RPMs. I have also tested this vehicle. there is an average of 2 MPGs difference. But where's the fun in that when you need to jump around the @#$ that just cut you off, accidently of course.
Manual Trans is great when you are young. As you get older ALL that knee action takes its toll.
