Default Gearbox Fault/Cruise not available

Hello everyone, Ok. Here is my latest issue.
I bought my 02 about a month and a half ago.
The guy that sold it to me told me that if I try to use the J selector shifting from 2 to 3 4th gear I would get an engine light. He said he thought it was a sensor.
Reverse and drive work great and I haven't had any problems with that.
So today I decided to try out the trans selector and immediately I got a message telling me "cruise not available" and "Gearbox Fault"
It also went into a limp mode. I got it home and turned the engine off for a minute. When I fired it back up it seemed to run fine as long as I keep it on the right side of the gear selector.
I have read a few post about this same symptom but a lot of those ones were moisture related. In a nutshell I would like to know if anyone could tell me what their experience has been or what they've encountered along the path of X-tyoe ownership.
Thanks a bunch.
Denny
