Gearbox Fault, no start, known good TCM & battery
Hi everyone -
I'm just about to give up and sell my beloved 2002 X-type 3.0L for $500/obo to whoever wants to tow it away. However, I thought I would try asking this community to see if there was anything else I should try.
My scenario: Car was running great. Then I stupidly left my dome light on and went on a trip. 10 days later my battery was fairly dead, and the dreaded "gearbox fault" was showing and the engine would not turn over even with a full battery charge. This happened a few years ago when my battery died and a new battery solved the problem. So, even though this is only a 2 year old battery I bought a new one and it didn't help. I removed and inspected the ECM connector and it seemed fine - no evidence of water or moisture. I then bought a new (used) TCM and this also did not help. I tried shorting the starter relay pins 1-5 which bypasses all the security and ignition circuitry and the key turns the engine over beautifully and aggressively, but of course it won't start without all the ECM signals I guess. I opened and inspected my original TCM and it all seemed shiny and happy with no evidence of water ingress or burned electronics. I'm not seeing the "cruise control unavailable" error that is mentioned in other forums.
I checked the trouble codes and get P1638 and P1642, as well as P1000 and P1699. These seem to point to an ECM problem although again there isn't any water or moisture around the ECM that I can see.
One other clue: my key fob stopped unlocking and locking the car even with a new battery. I tried reprogramming it using the key switch 4 times 1-2, etc. but that did not seem to function.
I'm fairly confident that if I get the car towed to a dealership they will find some cruel way to charge me $1500 - $2500 or more which is more than the car is worth, even if it's a very simple issue. Fact is, these gearbox faults are really tough to ID the exact cause and I would guess that any good mechanic would just start swapping parts to see what helps and that can quick run up the cost.
I could buy a new (used) ECM but I understand that has to be programmed to match up with the instrument cluster and ignition, but that seems to be way beyond my own ability.
Argh! I really love this old car and hate to part with her. But maybe it's time after 19 years.
Any thoughts from you esteemed experts would be really amazing. If there is a way for me to test my ECM to confirm it's functional that would at least eliminate another big piece of the puzzle.
All the best and thanks in advance!

Update: I checked all the fuses that seem to have anything to do with the TCM, ignition, starter and engine management system and they all seem fine. TCM = F5, F27, F40. Ignition = F2, F28. Starter = F29. Engine Management = F9, F32, F37.
If only it could be that easy!

P1638 code has nothing to do with the performance of your Jaguar or a tune-up. The P1638 is for the instrument cluster problem. Somehow and at some point, the Engine Control Module (ECM) lost communication of the Instrument Cluster (INST), through the Communication Area Network (CAN).

P1642 Jaguar' shows CAN Circuit Malfunction. CAN = Controller area networks = CAN-bus: allows the vehicle's devices to communicate with each other.

P1699 is a CAN Bus failure. This could be intermittent, a one off (confused data stream), or literally a hard failure such as the A/CCM or ECM., or a physical cable/connector failure somewhere along the path. The CAN network basically gets "rebooted or hard reset" every time the ignition is turned to the "0" position.
Heed in this posting "WHEN" 1699 occurs in the PATS module sequence checking.

Thank you, Dell.
Alas, I made the decision to sell her - hopefully to someone more deserving than me. All of this is beyond my own ability. She is gone now but never forgotten!
