Default Gearbox fault. What to look for

05 x type. Just got a gearbox fault while driving on the highway. First time I've seen this and I'm not sure what to look for. Car seems to be running fine. Is there truly a problem with the gearbox or could it be a sensor of some sort?

I also was driving my '04 X-Type yesterday and had the gearbox light come on followed by the check engine light. It is in the shop right now, hope it is nothing to serious!

harryc, if you start having issues with your throttlebody, it can cause the gear box fault symptom too. I would say based on your situation to let a shop look at it and see what they can find. It can be something as silly as the tranny is simply low on fluid to something much more catastrophic. Lets hope it is just something fairly simple and cheap to repair.

I just got my 2002 2.5 two days ago, before i even rolled the tires the gear box failure/ cruise not available error came up, with the check engine light. I took it to the dealer and then error cleared and the light went away. They checked it out and found nothing.

My recent fault light on the '04 Jag, turned out to be the J-Gate shifter, which had to be replaced. the Mech told me they had seen a 5 or 6, that they had to replace this year already.

It turned out to be my wife's purse. She puts it on her left side and it leans on the shifter. I think that it kept nudging it so much it threw up the fault.
After correcting the behavior it went away.
