GM Tech with dying X-Type
hi guys,
Im a journeymen GM tech, and we have been working on (sort of lol) an 03 Xtype with the 2.5.
The car drives great, 40k miles, no DTC's.
The problem is everyone once in a GREAT while, it will just die on the customer. No warning, the engine just dies. It will start back up after about 5 mins. Never misfires, just sort of chuggs, and died. I have generic scan tool equipment, with no DTC's ever.
I'm leaning towards a crank sensor, but since we just sold it, I don't want to just throw parts at it.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I experienced this exact problem with our 2003 X Type. Sometimes it would die immediately after start up, or at other times when sailing down the road at 65 MPH. It would run for up to a couple of weeks between episodes just to make it hard to track down. The short version of a long ugly story is that it was the fuel pump. FWIW, the longer the problem persists the longer it will take for a restart. In the beginning ours would re-start immediately. Later on it was almost an hour which is how we caught it. HTH

If it's not the fuel pump another quick thing to check is the positive cable that runs to the bottom of the engine compartment fuse box. It runs low across a body bolt and unless you actually feel the underside you can't see the insulation may have a small hole worn in it. Symptom when it arcs, is a shut down without warning and no DTCs. Just a thought and an easy check...good luck.
thanks for the info guys. I actually got ahold of the local dealer, and they said the same thing about the fuel pump. the boss is driving it this weekend with my fp gauge taped to the windshield lol. i guess we will see what happens.
