My 2002 X-type has H1 bulbs for the fog lights using the bulb socket (pictured). I’ve observed the the H11 bulb uses a similar socket but is one piece vs two pieces. My question is has anyone used an H11 in place of the H1 bulb and socket combination? If so, does the connection on the wiring loom fit the H11?
I was planning on upgrading to HID but none of the kits I’ve found are plug-n-play. All required modifications to the light assemblies and re-wiring.

RBaczek, if I am remembering things correctly, the H11 bulb fits into the housing and will lock down. The issue comes that the connector is shaped differently. So, what you would end up doing is going to your local auto parts store, finding some H11 sockets and then cutting the factory H1 connector off and installing the H11 connector. May want to double check me on that. If what I said is true, this will make upgrading to HIDs that much easier because then you simply undo the H1 bulb, get some H11 specific HID bulbs, screw them in, then you take the connector from the kit and cut off the factory plugs and solder it on. All done for HID fog lights. I know when I converted my car to HID fogs (having the H1 bulbs), I drilled out the converter, pushed the H1 bulb wires through the connector, then RTV'ed the snot out of the connector to make things water tight again. Then finished up the conversion.

 

Thermo, thanks. I’m still looking at your suggestion to modify the H1 bulb holders to route the HID wires through them.

Follow up question on the modifications. Did you cut the connectors off the HID bulbs to pass the wires thru the H1 bulb holder, then splice them back on? the connectors are quite large. (Pictured). Thanks

 

I did not have to remove the connectors, but you have to fit the larger connector through first, then squeeze the smaller one through second. You have to hollow out the adapter piece completely. This gives you just enough room. I used something like a 1/2" drill bit as I recall to hollow it out. I put the connector in a vice and then just drilled straight down through the connector. I then used a file bit like you would use on a pneumatic grinder to then open up the inside where I made my 2 drill holes. It doesn't take long to do. Just have a good RTV ready so you can feed the wires through, get the bulb close, squirt in a large amount of RTV and squish it all together and then fill the bottom of the connector, pushing it back towards the bulb some. Messy, but once you are done, it makes for a nice seal. I personally would be looking at the H11 bulbs as that is going to be easier and be more "plug and play".
