Default Headlight manual levelling problem

Hi Everyonel.
I need to check to see if I'm not doing something stupid (as usual) before I start stripping the headlight/s out of the car.
I recently noticed that my headlights seemed to be going up and down as I drive as though something was loose. I'm now suspecting the levelling servo / motors inside the headlight shell.
I've just checked the headlights (at night) in front of the garage doors by winding the levelling adjuster switch backwards and forwards to all positions. The left, nearside headlight seems okay as I can see the dipped beam and main beam moving up and down according to switch position. Whereas, the right offside light remains still, although it randomly goes up and down while driving.
I assume that the levellers operate on both headlights !
I now think that it's the righthand motor that is at fault. Is there a way of testing the motor after dismantling it from the headlight bowl ? Also, am I correct that the motors for auto and non-auto levellers are different ?
I know how to remove/install the headlights.
Many thanks in advance.

I start with what I am not 100% sure: I think the motors for auto and non-auto leveling are the same.
Furthermore I assume that your motors are all OK. Easy test: Let someone activate the leveling while your ears are at the motors: Just listen to them. I am fairly sure, you will hear both of them (check on both sides).

And from here onwards, it's more than just guessing from my side: I am confident you will need to replace a few plastic bits and pieces on at least one side - while you are at it, you could just as well do both, because the one, which is not damaged yet, will be damaged soon. I cannot remember, if I have done this fix on any of my X-Type already (But I have already ordered the repair kits for them, as I will have to do it someday - I definitely have not written the DIY guide for the X-Type headlight repair yet), but I have done it on my S-Type, and the procedure is pretty much the same, you just need a different kit for the X-Type:

A heads up: You need to remove the front bumper to get to the headlights and to open the headlights, you need a heat gun. That black gunk will then be heated up again, when you close the headlights again. You should not need any additional black gunk, but if: I found it on Aliexpress. It looks like a licorice snake.

Thanks for the reply.
Since my first posting, I've found out that the levellers on non-auto and auto levellers ARE different. I've seen pictures of both. Part number for non-auto levelling motor = C2S15088.
If it was the left hand ( nearside in UK) it would be easy to swap the motors in situ. However, it's the drivers side (righthand side) that is the problem because of the ABS module is in the way.
No choice but take the headlight out.
I've done this job twice before, once to replace all 4 adjusters. That involved splitting the headlight shells as you described.
Seeing that the problem only effects one levelling motor, I can rule out other causes such as the switch etc.
So, just need to get stuck in and get it done. Weather is main problem at the moment.

I understand now that you have swapped those plastic parts, which tend to break, already. You should have written that in your initial question, because anyone would have given you the advise I gave you without that extra bit of information.

I still do not understand, how one of your headlights can go up and down while driving if the adjust-motor is buggered. It should remain in one position with the motor buggered...
