Question Hello from Indiana

I recently purchased a wonderful 2002 Jaguar X, runs beautifully, garaged, navy over cream, 97K miles.

The only issue of note is the DSC light, so following forum recommendations I replaced the rather suspect battery with a new one of correct size/spec.

The Speedometer, Speed Control, etc, does not work - and the light does not reset upon battery replacement.

Diagnostic recommendations please, and if anyone has chased this ghost around their machines a few times, I would appreciate advice. Anyone with a supply of appropriate sensors, column bits, etc, let me know.... A little neighborly help from the next farm over would be very appreciated... $$

It is only 16 years old, but I remember when I was 16, and I had a few annoying characteristics as well.

Here is a pic of my $1300 beauty, and an Easter joke for you. Peace.

Mario, Fort Wayne

You could do with updating your signature with details of model version/ engine type etc

Most common place to start is checking the wheel speed sensor(s). Best thing to do is have it checked for the codes. Seeing as you do not know the history of the car is to delete all the codes and then see what comes back so that you are dealing with current issues.

If your speedometer is not working you could have a problem in the instrument cluster or a grounding issue or something else. But find out teh codes and search on here for them and also post what you find and someone should be able to help you better diagnose at that point.

The most common fault for DSC is a dirty wheel speed sensor. You need to remove and clean the face of each of the 4 wheel sensors. Also you should inspect the wires for damage. While the are out you need to examine the reluctor rings through the sensor mounting hole. If they are heavily corroded spray some WD-40 or solvent on them.
I think it is the left rear sensor that provides the input for the speedometer so you need to make sure it is in good condition. I would check the circuit continuity for all 4 sensors.

John, sounds like you need to get your OBD codes read. I bet you will find that you have 2 of the following codes (C1145, C1155, C1165, and/or C1175). Those are for the wheel speed sensors. From the description of your problem, 2 of these have failed and that will cause what you see. I am placing money on you having C1165 and C1175 (both of your rear wheel speed sensors). Those are common issues with the car.

But just as likely to be the toothed reluctor rings on the rear drive shafts that the sensors sense. They rust and fall loose.
