Default Help with headlight problems

Hi all,

So i purchased a nice jag xtype,2006 model, AWD, 2.5 v6 56000 miles from new full service history, unmarked interior, perfect wheels, the works, it had heated seats, climate pack, sat nav etc, overall i was very happy with the car. Until i sent it for the MOT and it failed.

The failure was 4.15 which i understand relates to the adjusters not working to higher and lower the beam. I understand this can be repaired, however i was happy to stick a new light unit in there, but thats where the problems started, the lights are HID, but Jaguar say they arent because the back of the lights should have a ballast on them, and mine dont, now there is a ballast on the wing each side under the bonnet ive been told the light is a normal unit for my car and its had a conversion, ive been told all manner of different things, so im here for some help.

Can someone please tell me if the light unit i have is the standard light which i understand works with HID bulbs, or whether they are the correct xenon lights fitted to Jag x types?

I think someone has converted your standard headlights to an aftermarket HID kit. My factory HID's are constructed as follows. On the back of the lamp housing is a square box (starter) mounted that holds the lamp assembly. The ballast is bolted to the bottom of the headlight assembly. The ballasts are not tie wrapped to the body works. I can't offer advise for converting back to original and not knowing the maker of the aftermarket unit advise on repairing. Try to find some ID info off of the ballast and maybe we can figure out who made it and then find the installation details to help repair.
The unit as far as I know is a standard xenon and not HID for your vehicle.

I have factory Xenon lights in my X-type. I have headlight washers in the front bumper and no manual headlight aim adjuster on the light switch. Is yours the same?

Are you sure it's the adjusters that failed the car. As I see it if your car is not fitted with HIDS from new you may not convert to them. it's a fail. I don't think any of our cars had them from new.

Hi Dunks

Yes, the auto levellers are the problem, when you turn the dial on the dash the near side light goes up and down, the off side doesnt, inside the light you can see the snapped adjuster too.

I have managed to find out a little more, the side light is an LED light, so it may be as everyone is saying the lights have been modified. My biggest problem is i need to know what the light unit is in the car as HIDs are different to the halogen units, and im not sure what the original lights were.

Do anyone know where the part number is on the headlights as it seems to me that may be one way of finding out if i ring a jag dealer, they may be able to tell me, but i cannot find a part number

It seems youre spot on, having spoken to Jaguar the car originally had standard headlights.

They have given me a part number so i can at least get a new headlight now

If the plastic lamp adjuster assembly has broken they can be repaired far cheaper than the cost of a new light.
Search ebay for jaguar x-type headlight adjusters. Also, take a look at the you tube video showing how it is done. If you need further advice PM me and I can help out. I rebuilt both of mine.

How do you remove the headlight washers? I know the bumper has to come off to get the headlight out, ive purchased the repair kit for the adjusters, but looking at the headlight washers i cant see how they come off. Any ideas?

I don't believe the washers themselves come off. I know fixing the cover you pull out, clamp in place to work on them, replace "crucifix" and cover, unclamp and let it return.

I bet you would leave them in place and remove the feed hoses on the rear to take the bumper off.
