Hi can anyone advise , a few weeks ago my auxiliary belt snapped so had a new one fitted , it was ok for a week but then ran over something in the road ( road tar) and it sprayed up over drive shaft gater and puilly wheels that made battery light come on and it smelt ,cleaned it all off , drove to work battery light went off, so replaced the battery now battery light keeps going on and off , there's a constant whirring noise and it's looking power , any ideas please ?

Jturner97, odds are, you are loosing power to the engine because you are running off of the battery and as the voltage goes down, the coils do not spark as well, leading to the loss of engine power.

Based on what you are describing, this is what I would recommend you try. First things first, put the battery on a charger and get it up to 100%. Now, with the engine cold, start the engine and let it idle. After the engine has been started, turn on your headlights (high/main beams if possible), dash fan on max speed, seat heaters, and rear defrost (we want to put a significant load on the alternator). Let the car idle in this condition for say 5 minutes. During this time, I would also recommend opening the hood/bonnet and using a small plastic tube, put one end near your ear and you wave the other end through the engine bay to determine where the noise is coming from. The sound will travel up the tube and help you pinpoint where the noise is coming from. This may be a critical aspect of this.

After the 5 minutes (or so) of letting the engine idle with all the electrical stuff on. cup your hand OVER (DO NOT TOUCH!!!!!!!!) each of the battery terminals, one at a time. Are the terminals about the same temp as other parts under the hood/bonnet or are they hot (ie, like fry and egg hot, hence the DO NOT TOUCH). If the terminal is hot, you need a new battery cable. If they are at the same temp as other components, then odds are your battery cables are good.

Get back to us on where the noise is coming from and if you need a new battery cable (or two). We can then take things from there. Too many possibilities at this point to really give a specific answer.
