Default Hood latch not holding

Hey guys the passenger side hood latch has not been holding. It pops up and I can see the hood shaking while driving, fortunately the left hatch and the release lever hold it down. At first I thought it was not grabbing the hook on the hood well, so I put in washers to elevate the latch slightly. After further investigation, the latch seems to release by just a slight tug of the cable feeding it. I found this out by closing the hatch with a screwdriver and tugging the cable. I noticed the cable has come out of its sheath and the surrounding spring casing is somewhat corroded. Is it possible that the corrosion extended the cable close to the release point, causing the unwanted release when jarred? Ok so now the replace this cable - is it a separate cable back to the lever inside the car, or does it join up with the driver's side latch somehow? As always any thoughts appreciated!

john, before you get going too far with this, get yourself some WD-40 and spray both hood latches with the WD-40 and if you can, spray some WD-40 down the cable to help keep any more rust from building up. That should solve your problem.

HELP! The right side latch seemed to be holding. Weekend comes, I go to check out and lube the cables, open the hood, and the right side releases but the left side does not. I check the lever under the dash, pull the cable with a pliers manually, to no avail. Noe to top it off the right side does not latch close! How can I open the hood to even start seeing or replacing all the cables? THANKS!!!!

OK took a deep breath an then searched the forum. Not an uncommon issue. I managed to pop the hood from below by flicking the latch lever with my hand. once the hood was up I was able to remove the latches to reset the cable. It seems the cable length between the latches grew probably due to a bend or corrosion, enough that the right latch would constantly be in the release position. I corrected for this by not setting the left latch cable that leads to the right latch in the slot on the latch; instead it sits outside of the slot, and I secured it with a cable tie. this gives extra length to the cable leading to the right latch, allowing it to latch and release properly. All is working now. Thanks to all who have contributed to this forum.

Now to figure out the short in the right front marker light.....
