in the driver's side door, there should be a manufacture date of the vehicle in date form. Mine just said 03/02 and was on a plate that was mounted to the door frame.

So the sticker says 10/03 but the car is registered as an 04.
could this mean i have the earlier style transfer case?

The Parts Manual always goes by VIN range which is far more reliable than the manufacture date shown on the door pillar label.

There was a facelift with some upgrades (steering wheel, front headrests, cup holders and etc.) I assume if you've got "new style" interior parts on board, your cat has a "new" transfer case as well. But the best way to be sure is to check with your local dealer

iownme, if you have the facelift, you have the new transfer case. The thing is that the 02 xtype was the first xtype available in the states, but they started making them in 01. It's how car dealers make more money. Right now, car dealers have "2013's" (actually 2012's) on their lot so they can keep them on their lot for a year and they can still sell them as new cars. Basically, the model year and the production are much different because the 04 model year xtype was introduced in 03 just like the 02 model year xtype was actually sold in the states in 01. It's all a way to make more money, but I'm positive with that build date that your car is a 04 model year. If you think about it, car dealers can come out with the next model year in september.
