Humming noise from Rear of car
I have an x-type v6 sport and there is an annoying and sometimes nauseas humm coming from the rear of the car ...usually about 40mph. I have had it into the dealer who said after having it up on the ramp tyre noise is the answer.. I have had new tyres and the noise is still there and the dealers dont seem to know or are unwilling to investigate the matter any further other than to put it on the ramp and check the wheel bearings. The car is still under manufactures warranty ...can anyone help me with this problem as I cant stand this noise any longer .
Thanks Vince

It for sure is a pain if the dealer is unwillin to help.
process of elimination trouble shooting can be expensive.
more info is needed to help you.. and what year is your car? what engine? (they are all V6s silly) what tires and wheels do you have?
There really should not be much drivetrain noise on an X-type. This past weekend driving on snow covered roads proves this. when you drive on snow, the tires are silent. so any noise you hear must be from something else.
Is the car ever quiet? are there certain types of pavement that are quiet?
depending on how savy you are with these things, does the noise change when you shift to neutral? can you coast safely on an open road and switch off the engine? (dont pull the key out obviously!!!!!!!!!! you need to steer)
if they have checked the wheel bearings, there is the possibility of the driveshaft centre support bearing, that is fairly common.

And actually they made more than the diesel 2.0 2.5 and 3.0...2.1 unleaded fuel and than 2.0 and 2.2 diesel...
Oh yeah one last thing why don't they make more diesel vehicles over here or send them over here? These diesels wouldn't bother me especially the new one's you can barely tell the diff....although the lag probably suck but the torque would be unlike anything else I'm sure!

Even the 2.2 diesel X will give the 2.5 a real run for its money and wont be far off the 3.0 I'd bet. The torque is absolutely awesome.
The Ford Mondeo Duratec engine 2.0 130 bhp engine was almost electric with regard to response, very like the pretrol variant. The 2.0 diesel 130 bhp would blow the 2.0 petrol equivalent away in performance and the fuel aconomy is like night n day.
The Saab 93 150bhp I had was very torquey, but all mid range stuff, brillaint when you needed to overtake, but the turbo lag was there for sure. I chipped it to 175 bhp and what a transformation? Turbo lag was a thing of the past and it was quicker and more responsive in all gears. Its 1.9 tid engine would easily leave the 2.5 X in its wake and still offer 48mpg motorway and around 42 - 44 mpg city / motorway driving.
Ever thought about importing one?

Bojangles the car is a black pearlite 2.0ltr petrol v6 sport 2005. I have had it in since we last spoke and the jaguar dealer has swapped the tyres around and it is slightly better, however having just put 1000 miles on the clock over the weekend going down to Poole and back I can just detect the noise coming back at around 50mph. I know you can have tyre noise and I used to have a Xedos v6 and that did suffer slightly, but this does sound mechanical. The warranty on the car comes to an end in June so I am concerned that after the warranty expires I will be left with an expensive problem. As regards the questions you asked its no to all...... the noise does not change over different road surfaces or steering configurations etc etc so I am at a slight lossif any body have this problem or can help I would be very grateful.
Oh one last thing there is a tinny rattle from underneath the car ...you hear it more when accelerating from start, you need your window open to hear it and its more pronounced or you can hear it better when you are in a confined space say between two buildings or driving past a wall, anyone know what it could be.

RE: Humming noise from Rear of car
how much are these center carrier bearings? I told them it was bad, but they never would bother to investigate even with new tires. The preferred to change the TC and it still didnt go away. I am going to slap one of these on for a quite ride fianlly since i have owned the car.

RE: Humming noise from Rear of car
I suspected the diff as well, but i would gather it to be the carrier bearing. My old car had a rear end problem associated with GM 10 bolts and its not much like the noise i am hearing. I will change the fluid though like i did in the 10 bolt to amsoil...it stopped the rear end whine and it might be worth a try.

RE: Humming noise from Rear of car
I was actually just reading those. It sounds as if it is the propshaft b/c it is coupled with a vibration too, but the vibration only translates through what feel like the steering wheel if thats normal. I know that the AWD TC is coupled off the left side of the transaxle so it would probably transistion into the front end but i really cant say.
