Humming noise while driving
Hey I have 2004 X Type 3.0 with 113k miles. I just bought the car a couple of days ago. It's I'd a super clean car and seems to be pretty well taken car of. The issue is when your driving it makes a pretty loud humming noise. It honestly sounds like tractor and trailor or maybe a jet air plane. I don't think it's the tranny as it shifts great. Idk what it is. I was thinking maybe the transfer case but I'm not sure. I am just lost as to what it could be. I don't want to start dropping a ton of money into random parts. I am just trying to figure out or get a idea of what the issue is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd suggest doing the T-Case fluid replacement (using the trick described elsewhere) would be good thing to do. That way you'd both eliminate a suspected problem, if it turned out not to be the T-Case, and would also make sure the T-Case had new fluid in it.

Yes, there are some good tutorials on how to check and change the oil. Also, check the rear "engine" mount that is attached to the transfer case. This is officially called the "roll restrictor" but sometimes this wears out and causes the noise you are hearing (could also be the prop shaft mount/bearing)
Does the noise change pitch as you accelerate, or is it the same all the time? It could even be a wheel bearing or something. Just try to test a few things and describe exactly the symptoms you are getting.

>I was told these are sealed for life
Yabut, there is very little fluid in them (500ml) and the seal on the drive shaft is prone to leaking (a spot here, a spot there, and you'd never really notice it) so they go dry and then self destruct.
Quick review of the fix: 1) with car level remove T-Case drain plug to let all remaining fluid run out, leave plug out; 2) raise car and put 2ft of blocks under the driver's side; 3) lower car so driver's side is now 2ft off the ground; 4) add fluid into T-Case until it starts running out the hole; 5) replace drain plug; 6) lift car and remove blocks from driver's side; and 7) lower car and you're done.
More details in other places.

The pitch does change with speed for sure. From 40 mph to like 70 the humming gets louder and louder but I haven't had the car any faster then that so idk if it gets louder after 70 mph. I had heard bad wheel bearings before and it's not the wheel bearing. I'm think the transfer case or that bearing your talking about. Where is the prop bearing located at? And I will also check that mount as well.
I will also go ahead and change the transfer case fluid. What king of fluid and and what weight should I buy?

I can't offer a solution but my 90K 2007 Sportwagon makes this grinding sort of noise - usually when coasting. When stopped at a light I hear a faint ticking noise that comes and goes. The Jag service could not isolate it but no idiot lights have come on yet. They also told me that the trans fluid "never needs changing g - sealed system." Good luck and wish me the same.

Rigsby, few questions:
-when you back up, does the noise become more of a ticking sound?
-when you turn left or right at speed (say a quick lane change) does the noise change?
-when you let up off of the gas, does the noise change?
I would say to first try greasing the carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft. From what you are describing, that is the most likely. Followed up with a check of the rear drive shaft U-joints.
From there, you would almost need to say remove the rear drive shaft and see if the noise continues. That would atleast tell you if it is in the front or rear of the car.
If the noise is sounding like it is coming from the center of the car, then that would also lead one towards the carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft.
