Hearing car accelerate and decelerate. Strange.
I have the 2002 X-Type going on 100k miles. I just bought the car and when accelerating I can hear it from under the car going faster, weeeeeee with each e going higher in pitch, then when slowing down it goes eeeeeeew till I stop. I found this most noticeable with the windows down while only doing about 40mph to 0 and up again. I think it may be coming more from the right front of the car, not sure as it's coming from underneath and I'm in the drivers seat. A non Jag dealer shop said it's probably just the transmission making the sound going through the gears, or the transfer case. Either way, I'm going to start having fluids replaced on everything under the sun, but from others experience, what is the typical cause of this sound? Is it something that should be of major concern, such as when this noise occurs, should I be expecting to replace the transmission soon?
I really appreciate anyones previous experience. Thanks to this site, I've already managed to save myself alot of troubles. If I might add, I went to firestone to have it inspected and asked to double check the front area about the noise. They came up with a tierod repair for 2800 dollars. Tried to tell me they had to replace the rack and pinion attached to the inner and outer rod. I went online and found a pair of Jaguar tierods for 30 bucks! Took the car to a Suzuki dealer up the street for a second opinion, they want 150 bucks to put in the new tierod of which they say the inner had no problem at all. Just a reminder, always get a second opinion!

Exactly what mohrd said.
If the noise is indeed coming from your tranny or transfer case, as your dealer said, then expect to bay big $ to have it replaced.
But it's most likely just the prop shaft issue the way you describe it. It's the center bearing that makes contact with the rubber and the result is a whining noise, especially when it's cold.
The bad news is that to fix this problem you'll need to replace the whole shaft. The good news is that if you don't mind the noise, you can drive your car without worries.

Explained the noise at a Jiffy Lube and they refused to do a transmission flush! Did the rear differential though. Figure at 98k it may need some upkeep if it hadn't been. Any experience on doing a flush with that many miles? Does it keep it going or mess things up? I've heard mixed reviews on if you don't do it, it can eventually clog up, and if you do do it at high mileage, it can also cause damage. What's the recommendation at almost 100k?

As far as the noise goes, your best bet is to visit a Jag dealer. A Jag tech should be VERY familiar with the prop shaft whine and should recognize it right off. It's harder for a non-jaguar tech to diagnose. I had one repair shop convinced it was my transfer case until I did some reasearch, took it to a dealer and had the prop shaft replaced. Whine is gone and although it was still a $1,000 tab, it was better than having someone screw with the TC.
Flush and filling the "sealed for life" components on your X-Type might get a few different views. Do a search here on the forum. Some will say that they did the flush and fill after recognizing there was already a problem happening and the component (TC, Autobox) blew up anyway. Most of us will agree that the "filled for life" for owners like us in the secondary market means the fluids eventually have to breakdown so a flush and fill of the rear diff, TC and tranny is absolutely necessary to keep our X-Types going.
Latest info out there is that Jaguar is easing up on the filled for life on the autoboxes and in fact now has a procedure to swith out fluid via the cooler lines rather than refuse altogether to do it. They still may want $90 a liter for fluid though. That's gotta get better.

Jiffy Lube did manage to chenge out the rear diff oil. I had to stand there and make sure they did what I asked them to as well. Firestone on the other hand had one of those set ups where you are made to go sit in a room, while god knows what the heck they are doing to your car. I don't even know if they really did an oil change or just tell me they did. Jiffy lube, you can stand right there and watch everything they do.
The propshaft I found a forum that shows a guy had made a needle tip for a greese gun and stuck it right into the rubber seal at the propshaft to help with the whine sound. That's what I may try to get a local shop to do next. As far as taking this to a Jag dealer, there is one in town and they sounded like they didn't give a crap about talkin to me about it, all about drop it off and we'll get back to you. Total attitude of we have your money, who cares about your car. This is in St.Louis so I'm not sure about anywhere else. I've had better service from GM and Suzuki. In fact the Jag is in the Suzuki dealer for the tierod, I may try to get them to give it a shot on the propshaft. I have still not officially bought the car. This forum has me ready to reconsider as it looks like anyone with an X-type has spent close to double the cost of the car just to keep it on the road!
