ARE YOU SURE YOU REALLY HAVE A BAD ALTERNATOR? IVE SEEN MANY REPLACED ERRONEOUSLY WHEN BATTERY CABLES ARE THE PROBLEM WITH HIGH RESISTANCE, ESPECIALY WHEN THEY GET HOT AND THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON. tHE ONLY TRUE WAY TO CHECK IS RIGHT AT THE BACK OF THE POSTIVE CABLE STUD ON THE ALTERNATOR FOR CORRECT VOLTAGE

The alternator is fuctioning property but one of the internal bearings has gone bad and it is making a heavy ratting noise. I looked under the hood and it does seem it needs to be dropped from the bottom, any way to remove it without opening up the ac system?

Its a big PITA I tell you, I removed the compressor from my parts car this weekend and if you are looking to get to the alternator you will need to remove the compressor or your radiator and condensor.
