Default Instrument Cluster Lighting Fault

I have a 2001 3.0 X type SE and it has developed a very strange fault which the Cluster lighting. Sometimes when the lights are turned on the cluster lighting illuminates fine but then other times all exterior lights come on ok but the cluster will not illuminate. On top o fthis issue I also noticed today that when I use the windscreen wash it sometimes knocks out the lighting on the cluster. This is very weird and is driving me nuts now as I don't know whether ti is the switch at fault or something else. If anybody can offer any advice on where to start looking it would be most appreciated.

Stumpy, the only common part between the two systems is the Generic Electronics Module (GEM). So, unless there is a wiring problem and the problem is inside the wiring harness, there are no common plugs between the two systems.

Hopefully someone else may have a better idea for you.
